As Jagdeep Dhankhar resigns from the office of the Vice President of India, citing health reasons, the nation reflects on the remarkable life and career of a man who traversed a journey from a humble village in Rajasthan to one of the highest constitutional positions in the country. A blend of legal intellect, political resilience, and constitutional integrity, Dhankhar’s life is a testament to how unwavering dedication and democratic values can define a statesman.
Early Life and Education: A Farmer’s Son with Big Dreams
Born on May 18, 1951, in the remote village of Kithana in Jhunjhunu district of Rajasthan, Jagdeep Dhankhar came from a modest Jat farming family. Despite the odds, he pursued education with determination, completing his schooling at Sainik School, Chittorgarh. He then earned a degree in physics from the University of Rajasthan, followed by an LLB from the same institution.
His rural upbringing deeply shaped his worldview, making him a strong advocate for rural upliftment, education, and farmers’ rights throughout his life.
Legal Career: A Journey to the Supreme Court
Before stepping into the political arena, Dhankhar carved a successful career in law. He practiced in both the Rajasthan High Court and the Supreme Court of India, gaining recognition as an expert in constitutional, civil, and election law.
His articulate advocacy and grasp of legal nuances earned him respect across the legal community, laying the foundation for his transition into public service.
Political Career: From Parliament to the Raj Bhavan
Jagdeep Dhankhar entered politics in 1989, elected as a Member of Parliament from Jhunjhunu on a Janata Dal ticket. A year later, he was appointed as the Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs in the Chandra Shekhar government (1990–91), gaining early experience in legislative affairs and national governance.
He later joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and became a key figure in Rajasthan’s political landscape. In 1993, he was elected to the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly from Kishangarh.
Despite periods of political quiet, Dhankhar remained a respected figure in legal and political circles, often recognized for his measured speech, legal precision, and commitment to parliamentary ethics.
Governor of West Bengal: Assertive Constitutional Voice
In July 2019, Dhankhar was appointed the Governor of West Bengal, a tenure marked by frequent and high-profile standoffs with the state government led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. His assertive stance on constitutional matters, law and order, and governance issues made him a headline figure in Indian politics.
Vice President of India: A Constitutional Guardian
On August 11, 2022, Dhankhar was sworn in as the 14th Vice President of India and ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. During his tenure, he was known for his emphasis on discipline, decorum, and debate in the Upper House of Parliament.
He often invoked constitutional values, encouraged bipartisan cooperation, and used his platform to safeguard parliamentary norms and the spirit of the Constitution. Dhankhar’s conduct was widely viewed as firm yet fair, with a deep commitment to the responsibilities of his office.
