HRDS INDIA and Netherlands-based Arkadis explore sustainable development projects in Northeast India under a proposed €1 billion international development programme
New Delhi: HRDS INDIA is exploring a strategic collaboration with Netherlands-based Arkadis to advance sustainable and inclusive development projects across India, with a particular focus on Northeast India.
The proposed cooperation forms part of a broader international development programme being pursued by HRDS INDIA, which envisages up to €1 billion in potential investments and development initiatives. Sustainable waste management and recycling are among the key areas under consideration.
The collaboration could combine HRDS INDIA’s grassroots presence and experience in working with local communities with Arkadis’ expertise in engineering, design, infrastructure, sustainability and project development.
The initiative follows a meeting in Amsterdam between Shri Aji Krishnan, Founder and Secretary of HRDS INDIA, and Hans Dekker, Chief Operating Officer of Arkadis. During the meeting, the two sides discussed HRDS INDIA’s development activities, local presence and work with underserved communities.
Following the meeting, Arkadis expressed formal interest in building a long-term strategic relationship with HRDS INDIA.
The potential areas of cooperation include sustainable and affordable housing, tribal housing, community infrastructure, soil testing, agricultural development, sustainable construction, rural development, infrastructure planning, climate resilience and environmental solutions.
HRDS INDIA’s Tribal Housing Project could become one of the potential areas of collaboration. The project aims to provide affordable and environmentally responsible housing for tribal and rural communities. Arkadis could support the initiative with expertise in sustainable construction, design, infrastructure planning and project development.
As a next step, Arkadis has expressed interest in sending a team of associates and professional representatives to HRDS INDIA’s headquarters in New Delhi. The proposed visit will focus on reviewing ongoing and planned projects, assessing technical requirements and identifying areas for future cooperation.
The wider development programme also proposes a strong focus on sustainable waste management, recycling and improved waste-handling practices. Rural development, affordable housing, environmental management and community infrastructure will also remain important areas, particularly in Northeast India.
The two organisations are also considering pilot projects to assess the feasibility of longer-term programmes. These projects could help develop scalable solutions with measurable benefits for local communities.
Shri Krishnan said the proposed cooperation could combine grassroots experience with international expertise, technology and strong partnerships to develop practical and sustainable solutions for communities across India, particularly in the Northeast.
