NEET-UG 2026 Cancelled After Paper Leak Allegations; Over 22 Lakh Students to Reappear for Medical Entrance Exam

NEET-UG 2026 cancelled after paper leak allegations, affecting over 22 lakh students. Fresh exam dates and admit card details to be announced soon officially

New Delhi: The National Testing Agency (NTA) cancelled the NEET-UG 2026 examination on May 12, 2026, after allegations of a major paper leak and irregularities surfaced from multiple states, especially Rajasthan. The exam was originally conducted on May 3, 2026, for more than 22 lakh medical aspirants across India. The Government of India approved the cancellation after receiving inputs from investigative agencies and law enforcement authorities. NTA has confirmed that a fresh examination will now be conducted on new dates, which will be announced later.

NTA Confirms NEET-UG 2026 Cancellation

On Tuesday, NTA officially announced that the NEET-UG 2026 exam stands cancelled and that all students will have to appear for a re-examination.

The agency clarified that students do not need to register again. Existing application details, exam centre preferences and fee information will automatically carry forward for the fresh examination. Officials also stated that refunds will be provided wherever applicable.

The matter has now been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a detailed probe into the alleged leak and irregularities.

What Led to the Cancellation?

The controversy started after allegations emerged from Rajasthan regarding a “guess paper” or suggestion paper that allegedly circulated in coaching hubs like Sikar before the exam.

Investigators reportedly found that nearly 120 questions from the actual NEET-UG 2026 paper matched questions that had already circulated among some students before the examination. Most of the overlap reportedly appeared in Biology and Chemistry sections.

According to reports, investigators recovered handwritten and printed study materials that had reached students weeks before the examination. Some reports claimed that such materials were sold for large amounts of money.

Authorities questioned more than 20 people during raids connected to the investigation.

Before the examination, NTA had dismissed social media rumours about paper leaks and said all security measures were in place, including GPS-tracked transportation and watermarked papers. However, the findings after the examination forced authorities to review the entire process again.

Over 22 Lakh Students Affected Across India

More than 22 lakh students appeared for NEET-UG 2026 on May 3.

For many students, the exam represented years of preparation, expensive coaching, emotional pressure and family sacrifices.

After the cancellation announcement, many students and parents expressed frustration and emotional exhaustion online.

“I studied almost 12 hours every day for the last two years. Now it feels like all that effort suddenly means nothing,” said a student from Kota preparing for her second NEET attempt.

Another student from Delhi said, “We followed every rule honestly, but still honest students are suffering because of paper leaks and corruption. It feels unfair.”

“I have been preparing for NEET for the last two years, and this year I was finally confident that my score would clear the exam,” said Mansi Sharma, a NEET aspirant from Delhi. “But after the cancellation, I feel completely hopeless. We worked so hard honestly, and now we have to go through the stress and pressure all over again.”

Parents also expressed frustration over the repeated uncertainty around major entrance examinations.

“My son already took a drop year for NEET. Now another exam means more pressure, more coaching expenses and more mental stress,” said the parent of a student from Lucknow.

Some students, however, supported the cancellation despite the emotional impact.

“If there was really cheating on such a large scale, then cancelling the exam is the right decision. We want fair competition, even if we have to write the paper again,” said a medical aspirant from Jaipur.

NEET Controversies Have Continued Since 2024

This is not the first time NEET-UG has faced allegations of leaks and irregularities.

The 2024 NEET controversy also triggered nationwide protests, Supreme Court hearings, arrests and debates around grace marks and paper leaks.

Despite promises of stronger security systems after 2024, NEET-UG 2026 again faced serious allegations.

Political leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, questioned the government over repeated failures to stop examination leaks.

Rahul Gandhi reportedly referred to claims that questions had circulated on WhatsApp nearly two days before the examination.

Why Did NTA Cancel the Entire Exam?

NTA said the decision was taken to protect the credibility, fairness and transparency of the examination system.

Instead of cancelling results only in certain regions or taking partial action, authorities decided to cancel the entire examination to avoid doubts about the validity of the process.

Officials believe a full re-exam will help restore public trust in NEET-UG.

The alleged involvement of coaching networks in Rajasthan has once again raised questions about the growing pressure and commercialisation around medical entrance preparation in India.

What Happens Next?

NTA has confirmed the following steps:
• Fresh NEET-UG 2026 exam dates will be announced soon
• Students do not need to submit new applications
• Existing application details will remain valid
• The CBI will investigate the entire matter
• Counselling and admissions will happen after the re-exam results

Students have been advised to rely only on official NTA announcements and avoid rumours circulating online and on social media.

The Bigger Question: Can Students Still Trust the System?

NEET-UG remains India’s biggest medical entrance examination and the main gateway for MBBS and other medical courses.

Repeated controversies over leaks and irregularities have started a larger debate around exam security, coaching centres, fairness and the pressure created by highly competitive entrance tests.

For many students, especially those from middle-class and financially weaker families, every cancelled exam means more emotional pressure, financial burden and uncertainty about the future.

At the same time, many aspirants believe a re-exam is still better than allowing unfair results to stand.

As one student wrote online after the cancellation announcement: “We just want a fair chance, even if we have to appear again.”
