Indian Railways to Launch 150 New Passenger Trains: Major Boost for Short-Distance Travel

Rail Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announces 100 new MEMU and 50 ‘Namo Bharat’ AC trains; new ticketing system and unreserved coaches also in pipeline

18 June 2025, New Delhi

In a significant move aimed at transforming short-distance travel in India, Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced the introduction of 150 new passenger trains, including 100 Mainline Electric Multiple Units (MEMU) and 50 state-of-the-art ‘Namo Bharat’ AC trains. The announcement was made during the inauguration of India’s largest PM Gati Shakti Multimodal Cargo Terminal at Maruti Suzuki’s siding in Manesar, Haryana.

Short-Distance Travel to Get Major Upgrade

Recognizing the growing demand for comfortable short-distance rail travel, the Railways is set to deploy longer MEMU trains with 16 to 20 coaches, compared to the current 8 or 12. These modern trains will enhance regional connectivity and passenger capacity, making travel faster, more frequent, and convenient for daily commuters.

‘Namo Bharat’ Trains Win Hearts, 50 More to Launch

Building on the success of the two existing ‘Namo Bharat’ AC trains on the Ahmedabad–Bhuj and Patna–Jaynagar routes, the government now plans to roll out 50 more such high-speed AC services. These modern trains are expected to deliver superior comfort and speed, significantly improving the passenger experience in key semi-urban and rural belts.

Revamp in Ticketing System on the Cards

To tackle the persistent issues faced by passengers during booking, the Railways is also working on a revamped digital ticketing system, promising faster, smoother, and more transparent services for users across the country.

General Class Travelers to Benefit Too

Minister Vaishnaw highlighted that over 1,200 general coaches have been added in the last year alone, helping ease congestion during peak travel seasons. This move offers much-needed relief to unreserved travelers, especially daily wage earners and rural passengers who depend on economical travel.

A Vision for Modern, Accessible Rail Travel

These initiatives underline the government’s broader vision to make rail travel more accessible, efficient, and modern. With enhanced infrastructure, upgraded trains, and smarter technology, Indian Railways is set to enter a new era of passenger service excellence.
