BCCI Forces KKR to Drop Mustafizur Rahman After Shah Rukh Khan Targeted in Backlash Over Bangladeshi Signing

BCCI orders Kolkata Knight Riders to release Mustafizur Rahman from IPL 2026 amid India-Bangladesh tensions. KKR can sign a replacement as controversy sparks political debate.

New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has asked Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to release Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman from their IPL 2026 squad. The decision comes just weeks after KKR bought him for a record ₹9.20 crore in the December 2025 mini-auction.

BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia said the move was due to “recent developments all across.” He was referring to rising diplomatic tensions and reports of violence against religious minorities in Bangladesh.

The BCCI has also allowed KKR to sign a replacement player. This ensures the team doesn’t lose out financially or in squad strength.

From Auction Glory to Controversy

Mustafizur, known as “The Fizz” for his deceptive cutters and slingy bowling action, was the only Bangladeshi player picked in the IPL 2026 mini-auction. A bidding war between Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals, and KKR drove his price from ₹2 crore to ₹9.20 crore, making him the most expensive Bangladeshi cricketer in IPL history.

The 28-year-old pacer has taken 65 wickets in 60 IPL matches, with an economy rate of 8.13. He debuted in 2016 with Sunrisers Hyderabad, winning the Emerging Player award and helping the team clinch the title. He has since played for Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, CSK, and Delhi Capitals.

Political Tensions Play a Role

The BCCI made its decision amid rising India-Bangladesh tensions in 2025. The unrest followed the ouster of Sheikh Hasina and reports of violence against Hindus and other minorities. In December 2025, the lynching of Dipu Chandra Das further heightened concerns.

The post-auction backlash included criticism from BJP leaders, Shiv Sena figures, and spiritual influencers, who questioned KKR co-owner Shah Rukh Khan’s decision to sign Mustafizur amid concerns for minority safety.

Though the government did not give any direct order, the BCCI’s move shows sensitivity to public opinion in India.

Responses from Key Stakeholders

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said cricket should remain separate from politics. He emphasized that Mustafizur is a professional and has no role in national disputes.

Analysts warned that mixing sport with diplomacy could hurt the IPL’s global inclusivity. They compared the situation to the post-2008 ban on Pakistani players.

Impact and Next Steps

KKR has not commented publicly, and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is waiting for official communication. The situation also casts doubt on India’s September 2026 tour of Bangladesh.

For KKR, losing Mustafizur disrupts pace bowling plans but allows them to sign a replacement. The episode highlights the delicate balance between cricket and politics in India, where off-field issues often affect the game.

As IPL 2026 preparations continue, the BCCI has chosen to prioritize harmony over a star player, showing how sport and statecraft intersect in high-profile tournaments.
