Top-level meeting chaired by Union Home Secretary emphasizes coordination, emergency response, and public safety training

New Delhi: In preparation for the May 7 nationwide mock civil defence drill, the Ministry of Home Affairs held a high-level review meeting on Monday to review preparedness and coordination across agencies. Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan chaired the meeting at North Block, which involved participation from all states’ top officials, along with representatives of 244 civil defence districts.

Emphasize Coordination and Emergency Readiness
The main agenda of the session was to refine plans for the drill and enhance inter-agency coordination. Key agencies such as the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), civil defence units, fire services, and air defence personnel will take part in the drill.

Special Attention to Sensitive and Border Areas
Officials also reviewed emergency response strategies in vulnerable and border regions, which are considered high-risk zones. The exercise will simulate such attacks as missile attacks, rocket attacks, and air attacks to test response effectiveness.

Blackout Simulations and Civilian Safety Protocols
The exercise, to be carried out across the country, will cover blackout simulation, air raid warning siren, evacuation drills, and the rollout of emergency shelters to check the readiness of both civilians and authorities.

Emphasis on Public Awareness and Self-Defence Training
According to government sources, the drill is not only aimed at testing official preparedness but also at educating and training citizens—especially students—on self-defence and emergency response. The effectiveness of measures like blackouts will also be evaluated during the simulation.

Heightened Security After Pahalgam Terror Attack
This initiative comes in the wake of the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, on April 22. In response, the central government has stepped up security across the country. The May 7 mock drill is seen as a significant step toward evaluating and enhancing India’s disaster management and national security mechanisms.
