Today marks the 123rd death anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, a respected spiritual leader, philosopher, and social reformer who played a major role in shaping modern India. Across the country, tributes were paid by citizens, scholars, religious figures, and leaders as they remembered his powerful contributions to India and the world.
Swami Vivekananda, born as Narendra Nath Datta on January 12, 1863, in Kolkata, passed away at the young age of 39 on July 4, 1902, at Belur Math, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire millions.
The Voice That Awakened the World
Swami Vivekananda earned international acclaim after his historic speech at the World’s Parliament of Religions in Chicago in 1893. Beginning with the now-iconic salutation, “Sisters and Brothers of America”, he powerfully conveyed messages of religious tolerance, spiritual unity, and the richness of Indian philosophy. His address left a lasting impression on the West and reshaped global perceptions of India.
A Life Committed to Service and Nation-Building
Born Narendra Nath Datta in Kolkata on January 12, 1863, Vivekananda was a disciple of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. Deeply moved by the struggles of ordinary people, he travelled extensively across India and later established the Ramakrishna Mission in 1897—an organization blending spirituality with social service. To this day, the mission continues his work in education, healthcare, and disaster relief.

His vision of a strong, awakened India continues to inspire our path forward.”
Swami Vivekananda passed away on July 4, 1902, at the age of 39, reportedly while he was meditating. His final resting place at Belur Math remains a revered site of pilgrimage. His collected works continue to guide seekers and scholars alike, offering timeless insights for a fractured world seeking peace and purpose.
