India Rolls Out the Red Carpet for Tesla: First Showroom Opens in Mumbai’s BKC

Tesla’s grand India debut begins with its first luxury showroom in Mumbai — showcasing the Model Y, stirring buzz, and signaling a bold step into the fast-evolving Indian EV market

15 July 2025, New Delhi

Marking a major milestone in India’s electric vehicle journey, global EV giant Tesla on Monday launched its first showroom in the country, located at the high-end Maker Maxity Mall in Mumbai’s Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC). Alongside the opening, Tesla also introduced its popular Model Y SUV, making it the first car the company will sell in India.

Tesla’s Model Y will be offered in two distinct variants for Indian buyers:

  • Rear-Wheel Drive – ₹60.1 lakh
  • Long Range (All-Wheel Drive) – ₹67.8 lakh

The vehicles are being imported as completely built units (CBUs) from Tesla’s Shanghai facility, which significantly inflates prices due to India’s high import duties. Nevertheless, the launch has stirred excitement among enthusiasts and luxury EV buyers.

Showroom as Experience Hub

Spanning over 4,000 sq ft, the Mumbai showroom has been designed as an “Experience Centre” — offering walk-in customers an opportunity to explore the car, understand its tech features, and book test drives. Tesla has also brought in six demo units and a shipment of V4 superchargers ahead of deliveries, which are expected to begin in the coming months.

Policy Pitch and Future Plans

At the event, Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis extended a warm welcome to Tesla and invited the company to consider Maharashtra for setting up its R&D and manufacturing units.

We are ready to extend every possible support to Tesla — from infrastructure to incentives — to make Maharashtra its long-term home ,” Fadnavis said.

Tesla has not yet confirmed plans for local manufacturing, but its entry follows India’s recent policy change allowing reduced import duties for EV makers committing to domestic production within three years.

What’s Next for Tesla India

Following the Mumbai launch, Tesla is expected to expand its presence with additional showrooms in Delhi NCR, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai by the end of 2025. The company will initially cater to premium customers but is also exploring wider rollout strategies, subject to market response and regulatory developments.

EV Game Changer?

While Tesla’s entry pricing positions it as a luxury offering, experts say the move is more about brand building and market testing.

“Tesla’s India entry is strategic. It’s not about volumes right now, but about capturing early adopters and setting the tone,” said Jay Kale, Auto Analyst at Elara Securities.

India’s EV adoption is still under 5%, but with government support and rising awareness, Tesla’s arrival could accelerate the shift toward clean mobility — one showroom at a time.
