Did Indian Drones Strike ULFA-I Camps in Myanmar? Army and Assam CM Reject Claims

ULFA-I alleges missile attack killed top leaders; Indian Army and State Government deny involvement

14 July 2025, New Delhi

A major controversy has surfaced over alleged drone and missile strikes on camps of the banned insurgent group United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) along the India-Myanmar border. The group has accused the Indian Army of launching air strikes on its mobile camps inside Myanmar, resulting in the death of top leaders and injuries to several cadres.

However, both the Indian Army and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma have categorically denied any such operation or involvement from the Indian side.

ULFA-I Claims Deadly Drone Attack Killed Senior Leaders

In a press conference held on Sunday, ULFA-I alleged that its mobile camps located near the Myanmar border were targeted in the early hours of the morning by armed drones and missiles.
The group claimed that Nayan Asom, also known as Nayan Medhi, who headed the group’s “Lower Council,” was killed in the strike, and at least 19 others were injured.

In a follow-up statement, ULFA-I alleged a second round of missile strikes occurred during the funeral of the deceased leader.

According to the group, this subsequent attack claimed the lives of two more senior leaders — ‘Brigadier Ganesh Asom’ and ‘Colonel Pradeep Asom’. It also stated that several members and some civilians were injured in the second strike.

Indian Army Denies Conducting Any Cross-Border Operation

Responding to these serious allegations, a senior spokesperson for the Indian Army told news agency PTI:

“We have no information about any such operation.”

Lieutenant Colonel Mahendra Rawat also reaffirmed that the Indian Army had no knowledge or involvement in any drone or missile activity in the region.

Assam CM Says No Involvement of State Police or Indian Forces

Reacting to the developments, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the Assam Police was not part of any such operation, and no attack was launched from the Indian side. He further clarified that if the Indian Army had conducted such an operation, an official statement would have been issued, which has not happened so far.

“This matter is currently under investigation,” CM Sarma added. “The situation is expected to become clearer by this evening.”

While ULFA-I continues to assert that it was targeted in a coordinated cross-border strike, official Indian channels maintain complete denial, leaving room for speculation and ongoing investigation.
As tensions persist, all eyes remain on potential updates and any diplomatic or strategic developments in the region.
