Hindu Homes Torched, Families Trapped in Bangladesh Amid Growing Attacks on Minorities

Human rights groups report that Hindu families in Bangladesh faced multiple attacks this December, with at least 10 homes set on fire and residents trapped inside.

New Delhi: A series of shocking attacks on Hindu families in Bangladesh has caused widespread fear and outrage. In several incidents reported between December 19 and 28, 2025, Hindu homes were set on fire late at night after attackers allegedly locked the doors from outside, trapping families inside their own houses.

At least 10 to 12 houses belonging to Hindu families were burned in parts of Chattogram and Pirojpur districts. While no deaths were reported, many families narrowly escaped, losing their homes, belongings, and sense of safety.

Night-Time Arson in Chattogram

The most disturbing incident took place on December 23 in Sultanpur village, Chattogram. The homes of two brothers working in Qatar were targeted while eight family members were asleep inside. According to survivors, the attackers locked both doors from outside and then set the houses on fire.

“We tried to run out, but the doors were locked from outside,” said one family member. The family managed to escape by breaking through tin sheets and bamboo walls, but their homes were completely destroyed.

Police said this was the sixth arson attack in the area within five days, following a similar pattern—fires set at night and doors locked to stop people from escaping. In some cases, handwritten threat notes were found, accusing the victims of acting against Islam.

Similar Attack in Pirojpur

A similar incident was reported on December 27 in Pirojpur district, where five rooms of a Hindu family’s house were burned early in the morning. The family woke up to smoke and heat and found their doors locked from outside. They escaped just in time.

With these attacks, the total number of affected Hindu homes has reached at least ten.

Police Action and Government Response

Police have arrested five suspects in Chattogram and are investigating the cases. Senior officials have promised strict action and urged people to share information. In Pirojpur, investigations are ongoing, but no arrests have been made so far.

Local authorities have also held meetings with community leaders to prevent further violence and promote peace.

Rising Concern Over Minority Safety

These attacks come amid a wider rise in violence against minorities in Bangladesh. Rights groups say incidents targeting Hindus have increased in 2025, especially after recent political changes in the country. Many fear that growing extremism and weak law enforcement are making minorities more vulnerable.

Public figures, activists, and religious leaders have strongly condemned the attacks, calling them planned attempts to harm and terrorize Hindu families. Some have questioned whether the interim government is doing enough to protect minority communities.

International Reaction

The incidents have drawn attention beyond Bangladesh, with concerns raised in India and by international human rights groups. Many are urging the Bangladeshi government to ensure justice, protect minorities, and stop further violence before the situation worsens.

As fear spreads among Hindu communities, calls are growing for stronger security, fair investigations, and serious efforts to restore trust and communal harmony in the country.
