Planning NYE in Delhi? Find out which roads are closed, traffic diversions, parking guidelines, and impact of the gig worker strike.
New Delhi: As New Year’s Eve 2025 approaches, Delhi residents and visitors are getting ready for celebrations—but the city is preparing for major traffic disruptions. The Delhi Traffic Police (DTP) released a detailed advisory on December 30, 2025, on X (@dtptraffic), Facebook, and their website, expecting large crowds at hotspots like Connaught Place (CP), India Gate, and nearby areas. With lakhs of people expected, the advisory aims to prevent accidents, manage congestion, and keep people safe—especially as Delhi’s air quality index (AQI) is dangerously high, between 400–450 this week, which could make long hours in traffic risky for health.

This year’s advisory follows lessons from NYE 2024, when over 1,000 drunk driving cases were reported and traffic jams slowed emergency services. “Our priority is public safety while ensuring smooth flow,” said DTP Joint Commissioner Meenu Choudhary, stressing zero-tolerance for violations.
Adding to the challenge is the ongoing nationwide gig workers’ strike affecting Swiggy, Zomato, Uber, and Ola. With fewer ride options, more private vehicles may hit the roads, increasing congestion.
Timeline and Scope: When and Where Restrictions Apply
The advisory, announced at 2 PM on December 30, takes effect from 7 PM on December 31 until early January 1, 2026. All vehicles are affected, except emergency services, residents or hotel guests with passes, and police-escorted convoys. Central Delhi, particularly CP and India Gate, will face the strictest curbs. Restrictions also extend to Paharganj, Saket, and Noida borders for cross-city traffic.

After 7 PM, no vehicles will be allowed inside CP’s Inner, Middle, or Outer Circles; consequently, the area will become a pedestrian-only zone for parties and fireworks. Similarly, India Gate’s C-Hexagon will be closed to prevent overcrowding, while drones and CCTV will continuously monitor crowds estimated between 50,000 and 1 lakh.
Checkpoints and No-Go Zones
Vehicles heading to CP will be stopped at key barricades, including:
• R/A Mandi House
• R/A Bengali Market
• North Foot of Ranjit Singh Flyover
• Minto Road – DDU Marg Crossing
• Chelmsford Road near Munje Chowk
• R.K. Ashram Marg – Chitragupta Marg Crossing
• R/A Gole Market
• R/A G.P.O., New Delhi
• Patel Chowk
• Kasturba Gandhi Road – Ferozeshah Road Crossing
• Jai Singh Road – Bangla Sahib Lane
• R/A Windsor Place
In addition to other measures, citywide restrictions will include heavy vehicle bans near malls in Saket and Vasant Kunj. Moreover, diversions will be implemented around Old Delhi Railway Station if crowds spill over. Similarly, in Noida, afternoon diversions will start near Select Citywalk and DLF malls to effectively manage cross-border traffic.
Parking Guidelines
Parking will be limited, with early evening spots filling up fast. Designated areas include:
Near CP (Gole Dak Khana):
• Kali Bari Marg
• Pt. Pant Marg
• Bhai Veer Singh Marg
Extended Areas:
• Rakab Ganj Road (behind All India Radio)
• Copernicus Marg (up to Baroda House)
• DDU Marg & Press Road (near Minto Road)
• R.K. Ashram Marg, Chitragupta Road & Basant Road

• Babar Road & Tansen Marg
• Windsor Place (Rajendra Prasad Road & Raisina Road)
• Peshwa Road & Service Road along Bhai Veer Singh Marg
• Jantar Mantar Road & Raisina Road
Illegal parking can lead to towing and fines starting at Rs 500, with over 200 cranes deployed. Multi-level parkings near Barakhamba Road and app-based bookings are recommended.

Diversions and Alternate Routes
North-South Corridors:
- Travel via Ring Road from ISBT Kashmere Gate to Ashram for a faster north-south route.
- Alternatively, use Delhi Gate – Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg – Mathura Road to avoid congested areas.
- Another option is Rani Jhansi Marg – Panchkuian Road – Mandir Marg, which connects central and south Delhi.
- Finally, Rani Jhansi Marg – Hanuman Murti – Ring Road offers an additional north-south corridor for smoother movement.
East-West Corridors:
- Use Ring Road – Bhairon Road – Mathura Road as a primary east-west corridor for smoother travel.
- For an alternative route, take Subramaniam Bharti Marg – Mother Teresa Crescent to bypass central congestion.
- Another option is Park Street – Shankar Road, which connects key areas while avoiding major bottlenecks.
Rail commuters:
• Approach New Delhi Station via Ajmeri Gate (Paharganj side) or JL Nehru Marg; Chelmsford Road is closed.
• Old Delhi Station has no direct restrictions but expect delays from nearby crowds.
• Airport travelers should use NH-48 and allow an extra 1–2 hours.
Safety Measures and Enforcement
- Personnel: Over 2,500 officers, including 500+ women, will man 125+ checkpoints for breathalyzer tests and vehicle scans.
- Drunk Driving Penalties: Rs 10,000 fine, 6-month license suspension, and possible jail.
- Fireworks: Banned in public spaces. Fire marshals are required at venues.
- Anti-Drug Measures: Squads will raid pubs. Minors are banned from licensed events.
The gig strike may limit Uber and Ola rides, causing surge pricing up to 3x. Urban planner Anjali Sharma recommends combining public transport and walking, with the Delhi Metro running till 1 AM on Yellow and Blue Lines.
Tips for Revelers, Residents, and Tourists
- Public Transport: Avoid Rajiv Chowk Metro exit after 9 PM. Use Barakhamba or Janpath instead. DTC buses run on special routes until 2 AM.
- Gig Strike Alternatives: Pre-book rides or use self-drive options. Support workers if services are available.
- Health & Environment: Wear masks due to poor AQI. Consider indoor parties or virtual celebrations.
- Real-Time Updates: Track via DTP app, X (@dtptraffic), WhatsApp (8750871493), or helpline (1095/011-25844444). Google Maps will show diversions.
- Business Tips: CP eateries may see 20–30% fewer visitors. Book tables in advance for safety.
This advisory reflects Delhi’s effort to make urban celebrations safer and sustainable, possibly paving the way for 2026 reforms like e-passes or AI-based traffic prediction.
