Is the 2026 Tata Tiago just a facelift? Discover its new design, 6 airbags, upgraded tech, and why it feels like a next-gen hatchback at ₹4.69 lakh
New Delhi: Tata Motors launched the 2026 Tata Tiago on May 28, 2026. This is the second major update to the budget hatchback in 10 years. The new model shows how much you can now get for ₹4.69 lakh — and it starts with six airbags as standard.
Ten years is a long time in India’s highly competitive hatchback market. The Tata Tiago has survived and stayed relevant. Tata first launched it in 2016, gave it a big facelift in 2020, and updated it again in 2026. The company calls this update a facelift, but if you compare the new model with the old one, you will see much bigger changes. Tata has redesigned the body, completely changed the dashboard, and upgraded safety from two airbags to six as standard. This feels more like a new-generation car with the same name.
Here is what has changed and why it matters.
A Decade of Evolution: Where the Tiago Stood Before
Before we look at the new model, let’s understand the older Tiago. After the 2020 facelift, it came with a 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine producing 86hp. The CNG version made 75.5hp. The dashboard had a curved design, which looked friendly but started to feel outdated by 2025. Most variants had two airbags, and the infotainment system had a 7-inch screen. It worked fine as a budget car, but it clearly looked old compared to newer rivals.
The 2026 update fixes all of that — and more.
New Design, New Thinking
You will notice the biggest change at the front. The older Tiago had a soft and rounded design with large halogen headlamps and a curved grille. The 2026 model completely changes this look. It now has a sharper and more upright front, slimmer headlamps, a thinner grille placed higher, and a redesigned bumper with a larger air intake. The car now looks stronger and more modern — like it has matured.
At the rear, Tata has added a connected tail-lamp design that stretches across the boot, similar to its SUVs. The roof spoiler looks cleaner, and the rear bumper looks simpler. On the sides, Tata has added new 15-inch alloy wheels and black cladding on the wheel arches, which gives the car a slightly rugged look.
The car comes in six colours: Daytona Grey, Pangong Pulse, Pristine White, Pure Grey, Sobo Surge, and Varanasi Vibrance.
Interior: Finally Feels Like 2026
The interior gets the biggest upgrade. The old dashboard had a curved design that dated back to 2016. The new model replaces it with a clean and flat horizontal layout. Tata has removed the old instrument cluster and added a digital driver’s display. The centre console looks updated, and the two-spoke steering wheel gets slight changes. AMT variants now use a rotary gear selector instead of a traditional gear lever.
The colour scheme also changes completely. Tata replaces the all-black cabin with a dual-tone light grey and black theme. This makes the cabin feel more spacious and premium.
Tata has also added useful features. Rear AC vents are now standard. The car gets a cooled glovebox and dual wireless charging pads, which is rare in this price range. It also adds cruise control, which was missing earlier.
Technology Upgrade: From Basic to Feature-Rich
The new Tiago offers a big jump in features. Tata upgraded the car’s electrical system to support more technology. It now gets a 10.25-inch touchscreen instead of a 7-inch unit. It also supports wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The digital display replaces the old analogue cluster.
The car now includes connected car features, which allow remote access and real-time updates. Tata has upgraded the audio system to four speakers. It also adds automatic headlamps and rain-sensing wipers, bringing it closer to more expensive cars.
One standout feature is paddle shifters on the CNG AMT variant. No other hatchback in this segment offers this. Tata has introduced this feature in a car under ₹5 lakh, which shows strong intent.
Safety: A Major Improvement
Safety sees the most important upgrade. The older Tiago offered two airbags in most variants. The 2026 model now provides six airbags as standard — including front, side, and curtain airbags. This ensures better protection in all variants.
Tata also adds Electronic Stability Control (ESC) with traction control. This system helps control the car during sudden movements or on slippery roads. Other safety features include a 360-degree camera, parking sensors, ISOFIX child seat mounts, ABS with EBD, and hill-hold control.
Tata has also strengthened the body structure. The company tested the car for front and side crashes and improved the monocoque for better protection from all angles. The older Tiago already had a four-star Global NCAP rating. With these upgrades, the new model may match or improve that rating.
Many competitors still offer only two airbags in base variants, and some have low safety ratings. The 2026 Tiago clearly stands out in this area.
What Stays the Same: The Engine
Tata keeps the same engine. The 1.2-litre petrol engine produces 86hp, while the CNG version produces 75.5hp. Buyers can choose between a 5-speed manual and a 5-speed AMT.
Tata made this choice on purpose. The engine is reliable, efficient, and well-tested. The company believes buyers in this segment prefer better features and safety instead of more power — and this update supports that idea.
Pricing: Right Where It Needs to Be
The 2026 Tiago starts at ₹4.69 lakh (ex-showroom). This makes it slightly cheaper than the Maruti Suzuki Celerio and much cheaper than the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios. Tata offers six variants: Smart, Pure, Pure+, Pure+ A, Creative, and Creative+.
At the top end, the petrol-AMT version sits between the Celerio and the Grand i10 Nios in price. Tata also offers CNG options across multiple variants, giving buyers more flexibility.
Tata calls this update a facelift, and technically it is. The platform, engine, and size remain the same. But almost everything else has changed. Tata redesigned the exterior, rebuilt the interior, added many new features, and doubled the airbag count while strengthening the body.
All prices are ex-showroom India. Tata Motors officially launched the 2026 Tiago on May 28, 2026.
