After a five-year hiatus, the much-awaited Kailash Mansarovar Yatra has officially resumed via the Nathu La Pass. On Monday, the first batch of 36 pilgrims — comprising 23 men and 13 women — set off from Sikkim to begin the sacred journey.

Before embarking on the main trek, the pilgrims will arrive at the Base Camp located at 18 Mile, where they will undergo an acclimatization process. The group is scheduled to proceed towards Mansarovar on June 20.

According to Rajendra Chettri, CEO of the Sikkim Tourism Development Corporation (STDC), all pilgrims received detailed briefings and safety training from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) prior to the journey. Accompanying the group are a liaison officer, chefs, a doctor, and ITBP personnel to ensure logistical and medical support throughout the route.

Pilgrims will first spend two days at the 18 Mile acclimatization center, followed by a two-day stay in Sherathang. During this period, they will gradually adapt to the high-altitude environment. Activities such as local sightseeing, yoga sessions, and devotional gatherings (bhajan evenings) have been planned to support their mental and spiritual well-being.

On June 20, following mandatory medical screenings and document verification, the group will be granted permission to cross into Chinese territory.

On this significant occasion, CEO Chettri stated: “This is a moment of pride not just for Sikkim but for the entire nation. The pilgrimage stands as a symbol of deep spiritual faith, and it also showcases the state’s hospitality and preparedness. We are already receiving positive feedback from the pilgrims, which reflects the success of our efforts.”

The resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via Nathu La is not only a milestone in terms of religious and spiritual importance, but also a significant step toward strengthening cross-border tourism, cultural exchange, and mutual cooperation between India and China.
