Following the deadly Ahmedabad Air India crash, passenger awareness and demand for safety reforms see a sharp rise across India
19 June 2025, New Delhi
In the wake of the tragic Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, where 241 of 242 passengers onboard lost their lives, Indian flyers are showing a heightened sense of caution and concern regarding flight safety. The incident, one of the worst aviation disasters in recent years, has left a lasting impact on the psyche of air travelers across the country.
A recent survey conducted by LocalCircles has revealed a significant shift in consumer behavior. As many as 41% of respondents now say they actively check the aircraft model before booking their tickets — a sharp rise from just 10% in 2022. This change highlights how deeply the disaster has influenced public trust in aviation safety.
One of the key concerns that has emerged is the Boeing 787-8 aircraft, the same model involved in the Ahmedabad crash. A growing number of passengers are demanding that the Indian government temporarily ground this model until all safety issues are thoroughly investigated and addressed. According to the survey, 56% of participants support halting operations of the Boeing 787-8 until further notice, while 34% believe flights should only be paused if definitive technical faults are confirmed.
The survey also sheds light on what factors Indian travelers now prioritize before booking their flights. Among the 40,000+ respondents from 294 districts,
- 73% compare ticket prices,
- 64% consider airline reputation,
- 59% factor in flight timings, and
- 41% now verify the aircraft model.
Only 5% did not provide a clear response.

Aviation experts believe that regaining public confidence will require strong regulatory action. They recommend that the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) conduct a comprehensive inspection of all 33 Boeing 787-8 aircraft in Air India’s fleet. Additionally, a review of past maintenance records is essential to ensure long-term safety compliance.
Only after a transparent and thorough audit can it be determined whether these aircraft are safe to fly again. Until then, the focus remains on addressing passenger anxiety and restoring trust in the skies.
