PIB Puts Panic to Rest: ATM Closure Rumor is Completely Fake

As Misinformation Spreads, PIB Reminds Citizens to Verify Before Sharing Messages
9 May 2025, New Delhi
In response to a widely circulated WhatsApp message falsely claiming that ATMs across India would be closed for 2–3 days, the Press Information Bureau (PIB) has issued a categorical denial. Through its official fact-checking handle on X (formerly Twitter), PIB clarified that the message is “FAKE” and assured citizens that “ATMs will continue to operate as usual.”
The misleading message, which has sparked concern among users, alleges that ATM services would be suspended due to a supposed “ransomware cyber-attack war” involving Pakistan. It also warns against online transactions and references a video titled “Dance of the Hillary,” advising recipients not to open it.
PIB has urged the public to refrain from sharing unverified messages and to rely on official sources for accurate information. The organization warned against the propagation of false information, particularly during delicate periods, and underlined the value of fact-checking.
