U.S.-born missionary chosen as 267th pontiff, marking a new chapter for global Catholic leadership
8 May 2025, New Delhi
In an unprecedented moment for the Roman Catholic Church, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, a 69-year-old American-born cleric, has been elected pope, becoming the first U.S. citizen to ascend to the papacy in the Church’s two millennia of history. Upon his election, he adopted the name Pope Leo XIV.
White smoke billowed from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel shortly after 6 p.m. local time, signaling that the 133 cardinals in the conclave had reached a unanimous decision. Joyous crowds erupted in St. Peter’s Square as the bells of St. Peter’s Basilica rang out. Pilgrims, clergy, and visitors from around the world cheered, waved flags, and chanted “Viva il Papa!” as they waited for the identity of the new pope to be revealed.
Pope Leo XIV steps into the role following the death of Pope Francis, who passed away last month at the age of 88. After four rounds of voting, the new pontiff was chosen on the second day of the conclave. This choice was made rather quickly, suggesting that the cardinal electors had reached an agreement.
Born in Chicago in 1955, Prevost spent much of his religious life outside the United States. After joining the Order of Saint Augustine, he served for many years in Peru as a missionary and later as the bishop of Chiclayo. His deep pastoral experience in Latin America, coupled with his bilingual and multicultural fluency, has long made him a bridge between the global north and south within the Church.
In 2023, Pope Francis appointed him as Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, one of the Vatican’s most powerful offices, responsible for overseeing the selection and governance of bishops across the globe. That role positioned him at the heart of Church administration and solidified his standing as a trusted voice on ecclesiastical matters.
Leo XIV made his first appearance as pope from the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, where he blessed the world and articulated a vision focused on compassion, service, and peace. “Let us walk together in faith and fraternity,” he said, offering a message that signaled continuity with the values emphasized by his predecessor.
Church observers note that Pope Leo XIV is expected to continue many of Pope Francis’s reforms, with an emphasis on social justice, transparency, and outreach to communities on the periphery of the Catholic world. His background in missionary work and his leadership in shaping the global episcopate suggest a pope who is pastoral at heart but firmly engaged in the Church’s institutional responsibilities.

As the first American to hold the papacy, Leo XIV’s election is a landmark event that reflects the increasingly global nature of Catholicism. With over 1.3 billion members worldwide, the Church continues to evolve beyond its European roots, embracing leadership from diverse cultures and continents.
The coming days will see the formal start of Pope Leo XIV’s papal ministry, as the Church and the world watch to see how he will guide one of the world’s oldest and most influential institutions into its next chapter.
