Boxer and former Congress leader Vijender Singh made headlines on Sunday as he officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), stating that it feels like a homecoming for him. This move comes as a significant setback for the Congress party, given Singh’s prominent stature and past association with them.
Singh, a distinguished Olympic medalist, announced his decision to join the BJP at the party’s Delhi headquarters, expressing his eagerness to contribute towards the nation’s progress and serve its people. Notably, Singh had contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections as the Congress nominee from the South Delhi constituency, a race he ultimately lost.
His decision to switch parties has raised eyebrows, particularly as speculation had been rife about his potential candidacy for the upcoming elections. Singh’s name had been circulating as a potential nominee for the Mathura constituency, currently represented by actor and sitting Member of Parliament Hema Malini. He is a member of the Jat community, which is politically powerful in many seats in Rajasthan, western Uttar Pradesh, and his home state of Haryana.
