Pre-Lok Sabha Election: Seat-Sharing Talks and Political Turmoil Grip India

New Delhi, 29 March 2024

The Lok Sabha elections are coming and along with it, there are a number of events occurring around India. The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Congress are on the verge of finalizing a deal about seat-sharing in Bihar, following extensive discussions between their senior leaders. The specifics of their cooperation, which represents a unified front in the electoral campaign, will probably be disclosed during a joint press conference on Friday.

However, seat-sharing is the sticking point in Maharashtra discussions between the ruling Mahayuti coalition and the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). Sources inside the MVA are hopeful that a resolution can be achieved by the weekend despite the impasse, which highlights their continued attempts to strengthen their election approach.

The political landscape of Karnataka has taken on a new dimension due to demands made by the Veerashaiva Lingayat seers in Hubballi. They have demanded that Pralhad Joshi, the current BJP candidate for the Dharwad seat, be replaced and have given the BJP till March 31 to comply. If their requests are not met, the seers may run their own candidate, which might change the makeup of the local election.

The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) in Punjab has, meanwhile, declared the confirmation of five candidates for the next Lok Sabha elections. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced that it will run independently for every seat in the state. The parties’ readiness for the impending election struggle was further demonstrated by the announcement of two candidates for Haryana.
