Dr. K A Paul criticizes the government for glorifying foreign athletes like Lionel Messi while neglecting Indian players, calling for systemic reforms and stronger investment in domestic sports infrastructure.
New Delhi | 13 December 2025:
International peace ambassador and social activist Dr. K A Paul has sparked nationwide controversy by questioning India’s political and financial focus on foreign sports icons, particularly Lionel Messi, over domestic talent development.
In a widely circulated video statement, Dr. Paul criticized the extravagant arrangements and public expenditure linked to Messi’s India visit, calling it “a major misplacement of national priorities” that sidelines Indian athletes and youth.
He alleged that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi traveled on a special aircraft to meet Messi in Hyderabad and criticized the West Bengal government for reportedly planning an 18-crore statue in the footballer’s honor. Dr. Paul also targeted Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, claiming he prioritized foreign sports personalities while failing to fulfil promises toward education and youth programs.
“Why are hundreds of crores being spent on one foreign athlete while our own players lack basic facilities?” Dr. Paul questioned. He stressed that India must invest in its athletes to compete internationally, citing China, Russia, and the United States as examples of nations that achieve Olympic success through consistent infrastructure and talent development.
Dr. Paul also questioned the practice of erecting statues for foreign athletes, stating that national icons like Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, and Mother Teresa deserve such recognition. He described the political attention surrounding Messi’s visit as excessive and demeaning, arguing that “politicians have lowered national standards by treating a sports star as a divine figure.”
Recounting his own experiences from the 1990s, Dr. Paul said he had hosted international sports legends, including Evander Holyfield and Mahesh Bhupathi, to inspire Indian youth—not to divert public resources or political focus.
He further criticized “fake agreements” and unfulfilled funding promises to institutions like Osmania University, warning that such practices undermine India’s future and public trust. “Where is the money that was promised? Has it been transferred?” he asked.
Dr. K A Paul concluded by urging citizens to hold leaders accountable and focus on the development of domestic talent. “We must prioritize our players, our youth, and our future. Change is essential, and together we can achieve it,” he said, calling on the public to share his message widely.
