For three years, the centre has paired academic support with school admissions, sports, dance and craft activities
New Delhi: For three years, the Dr. M. L. Agarwal Educational and Rural Development Trust has operated the Uthaan Education Centre in Inder Camp, Rangpuri slums, supporting young girls’ education and all-round development. The centre gives tuition and academic support to girls aged six to 14.
Twenty girls from the local community currently attend the centre. The Trust hired a teacher from within the community and appointed a coordinator to run the centre’s daily operations, ensuring the programme stays accessible to local families. It has also arranged a dedicated room in the locality where the girls gather for their lessons.
Beyond academic support, Uthaan works to keep girls connected to formal schooling. While most of the girls already attended school, the Trust helped the remaining girls enrol in schools nearby. This effort strengthens the girls’ academic foundation and keeps them engaged with education over the long term.
The centre also builds the girls’ confidence through extracurricular activities. It offers dance, sports and craft sessions that let the girls discover and showcase talents outside the classroom, while encouraging them to spend their time in healthier, more constructive ways.
Recently, the Trust held a prize distribution ceremony to honour girls for their academic achievements. It recognised students who had excelled in their studies, and the girls performed dance items for the occasion — one of which delivered a message encouraging children to use social media responsibly and limit excessive screen time.
Dr Ravi Aggarwal (Trustee), Mrs Anju Aggarwal (Trustee), Dr. Vishal Kaura Aggarwal (Consultant in Rheumatology, BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital), Dr. Raghav Aggarwal (musculoskeletal ultrasound radiologist, Dr. M. L. Agarwal Imaging Centre Pvt Ltd, Safdarjung Enclave), and social worker-philanthropist Ms. Anjali Sharma graced the event. Their presence lifted the students’ spirits and highlighted how community involvement strengthens initiatives that widen children’s access to education.
Through Uthaan, the Dr. M. L. Agarwal Educational and Rural Development Trust continues to build a supportive environment where local girls can pursue education, develop their talents and gain the confidence to shape a stronger future.
