Gaikwad & Samson to Open for CSK in IPL 2026

Is CSK’s new opening pair the game-changer? Gaikwad confirms he will open with Sanju Samson after one of IPL’s biggest trades

New Delhi: At the IPL Captains’ Meet in Mumbai on March 26, 2026, one simple question cut through months of speculation around Chennai Super Kings. Who would open the batting? The options were laid out—Ayush Mhatre, Sanju Samson, or Ruturaj Gaikwad himself. Gaikwad didn’t take a moment. The answer was clear.

Gaikwad, the CSK captain, answered without hesitation. “Rutu and Sanju,” he said. With that simple reply, he confirmed that he and the newly joined Samson will open the batting for the five-time champions in the upcoming season.

The Trade That Changed Everything

Just four months earlier, on November 15, 2025, CSK made one of the biggest trades in IPL history. Sanju Samson, who had been retained by Rajasthan Royals for ₹18 crore after leading them for five seasons, moved to CSK.

In exchange, CSK sent Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran to Rajasthan Royals. CSK Managing Director Kasi Viswanathan called it one of the “toughest decisions” the team had ever made. Jadeja’s value was adjusted to ₹14 crore for RR, while Samson kept his ₹18 crore price.

This decision came after CSK’s worst IPL season in 2025. The team finished last, mainly because their top order kept failing. No batting combination worked. Ruturaj Gaikwad also missed much of the second half due to injury, and MS Dhoni stepped in as captain.

The Big Question: Who Would Open?

After the trade, the biggest question was about roles. Samson, fresh from a brilliant performance in India’s T20 World Cup 2026 win, was almost certain to open. He scored 97* against West Indies, 89 in the semi-final against England, and 89 in the final against New Zealand.

But who would open with him?

Many expected Ayush Mhatre, the U-19 World Cup-winning captain, who showed promise as an opener in 2025. Others felt Gaikwad, who had been batting at No. 3 recently, should stay in the middle order. Experts had different opinions.

Gaikwad’s answer at the captains’ meet ended the debate. Mhatre will not open. The new opening pair is set: Gaikwad and Samson.

Already Tested on the Field

This decision was not sudden. Gaikwad and Samson had already opened together in practice matches for CSK, including one against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Clips of the two Indian batters opening together quickly went viral. Gaikwad’s calm and steady style combined well with Samson’s aggressive and powerful hitting.

More Than Just a Batting Change

This is not just a small change in the batting order. It is CSK’s direct response to what went wrong in 2025. The team’s top order failed again and again, which put pressure on the middle order and bowlers.

Now, CSK is going back to what worked earlier. Gaikwad returns to the opening role where he was successful till IPL 2024. He will partner Samson, who has played 177 IPL matches and scored 4,704 runs, with a highest score of 119.

The idea is simple:
• Gaikwad will play the anchor role and build the innings.
• Samson will attack and take advantage of the powerplay.

Samson is also expected to have a bigger role in the future. This could include wicketkeeping duties as the 44-year-old Dhoni slowly moves towards the later stage of his career.

Meanwhile, Mhatre is likely to bat at No. 3. This shows that CSK is planning for the future while still benefiting from Dhoni’s experience in the dressing room.

A Perfect First Match Twist

There is also an interesting twist in timing. CSK’s first match of IPL 2026 is against Rajasthan Royals on March 30 in Guwahati—the same team Samson just left.

It will be the first time Samson plays against his former teammates in CSK’s yellow jersey in a competitive match.

From a massive trade to a clear decision at the captains’ meet, the Gaikwad-Samson opening pair is now official. It is a direct result of CSK trying to rebuild after their worst season.
