Virat Kohli reached 15,000 ODI runs against West Indies, becoming the fastest batter to the mark and joining Sachin Tendulkar in an elite club
New Delhi: Virat Kohli reached 15,000 ODI runs during India’s first ODI against West Indies at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram on September 27, 2026. He entered the match with 14,941 runs and needed 59 more to reach the landmark. Kohli became only the second batter after Sachin Tendulkar to cross 15,000 ODI runs. He reached the mark in his 315th ODI match and 303rd innings.
The milestone added another major chapter to Kohli’s ODI career. He also became the fastest batter to reach 15,000 ODI runs, although Tendulkar reached the mark at a younger age when measured from his debut.
The moment: two boundaries off Alzarri Joseph
Kohli crossed 15,000 in the 29th over of India’s chase. He hit two consecutive boundaries against Alzarri Joseph to move from 14,999 to 15,001.
The second boundary completed the milestone. Kohli then raised both hands to acknowledge Tendulkar and the significance of the achievement.
West Indies had set India a target of 296, giving Kohli and the Indian batting line-up a substantial chase.
Fastest by a huge margin: 303 innings vs 377
Kohli needed 303 innings to reach 15,000 ODI runs. Tendulkar took 377 innings, meaning Kohli reached the landmark 74 innings earlier.
Kohli also reached the mark in fewer balls. He faced 15,950 balls to get to 15,000 runs, while Tendulkar needed 17,528 balls.
However, one age-related distinction puts the achievement in context. Tendulkar reached 15,000 ODI runs at 34 years and 66 days old. When measured from debut, he reached the milestone 212 days quicker than Kohli.
So, Kohli owns the records for reaching 15,000 in fewer innings and fewer balls, while Tendulkar remains younger by that particular debut-to-milestone measure.
A record built one milestone at a time
Kohli did not suddenly arrive at this record. He had already become the fastest batter to 8,000, 9,000, 10,000, 11,000, 12,000, 13,000 and 14,000 ODI runs.
His 10,000th ODI run also came against West Indies. In 2018, Kohli reached that figure in his 205th innings in Visakhapatnam, beating Tendulkar’s previous mark of 259 innings.
Eight years later, West Indies again featured in one of the biggest milestones of his ODI career.
The 74-ball hundred and nine sixes
Kohli continued his innings after reaching 15,000 and produced another landmark performance. He completed his century from 74 balls, making it his third-fastest ODI hundred.
Only his 52-ball and 61-ball centuries against Australia in 2013 came quicker.
The innings also produced nine sixes, the most Kohli has hit in one ODI innings. His previous best was eight sixes against Sri Lanka in 2023, also in Thiruvananthapuram.
His nine sixes also set a new mark for an Indian batter against West Indies in ODIs, moving past Rohit Sharma’s eight sixes in Guwahati in 2018.
The century was Kohli’s 10th in ODIs against West Indies, tying the joint-most hundreds by any batter against a single opponent. He also completed his 80th ODI fifty on the way to the century.
ESPNcricinfo reported another record from the innings: Kohli became the first player to score 7,000 ODI runs in one country, taking his tally in India to 7,006 and moving past Tendulkar’s 6,976.
The “Chase Master” tag
Kohli has built much of his ODI reputation around run chases, particularly when India need to control a target over 50 overs.
His latest milestone came during another chase, but the 15,000-run achievement goes beyond one particular innings. It reflects his consistency across more than a decade of ODI cricket and his ability to keep adding major landmarks to his career.
His 2026 milestone also adds to a record trail that includes the fastest marks from 8,000 through 15,000 ODI runs.
Kohli’s World Cup legacy
The 2027 ODI World Cup now gives this milestone an important backdrop. Kohli has played four ODI World Cups and won the 2011 edition with India.
At the 2023 World Cup, he finished as the tournament’s leading run-scorer with 765 runs, including three hundreds and six fifties. During the semi-final against New Zealand, he became the first batter to score 50 ODI hundreds.
Across his World Cup career, Kohli has scored 1,795 runs in 37 matches at an average of 59.83. He has five hundreds and 12 fifties in the tournament.
The all-time ODI run-scorers list
Kohli’s latest innings also moved his career tally to 15,080 ODI runs. He now sits second on the all-time list, behind Tendulkar.

Kohli now has 846 more ODI runs than third-placed Kumar Sangakkara. Tendulkar remains 3,346 runs ahead of Kohli at the top of the list.
What this means for the road to 2027
Kohli’s 15,000-run milestone comes at an important point in his international career. He retired from T20Is after India’s 2024 T20 World Cup victory and stepped away from Test cricket in May 2025, leaving ODI cricket as his only international format.
Earlier this week, Kohli told JioStar that the 2027 World Cup will be his last World Cup for India. That puts his latest milestone alongside a clear next chapter: another World Cup campaign, this time on home soil.
Kohli began the day on 14,941 ODI runs and finished with 15,080. The gap to Tendulkar’s 18,426 remains, while his own record book continues to grow.
