13 June 2025, New Delhi

Gautam Gambhir, head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team, has returned to India after his mother suffered a heart attack. He left the England tour on Thursday and is currently with his family in Delhi, where his mother is being treated in the ICU at a private hospital.

Sources close to the family shared that Gautam Gambhir’s mother’s condition became critical late Wednesday night, following a sudden heart attack. In response, the head coach took an emergency flight back to India. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) granted him immediate leave and extended its full support during this difficult time.

Gautam Gambhir’s departure comes at a critical juncture, coinciding with India’s high-stakes Test series against England. The team had just begun preparations for the second Test when news of his sudden exit surfaced. In his absence, the assistant coaching staff is expected to oversee daily training and match preparations.

Gambhir, who took over as India’s head coach in July 2024, has been widely praised for infusing a bold and tactical approach into the team’s gameplay. Under his guidance, India recently clinched the ICC Champions Trophy, marking a significant high point in his short but impactful coaching tenure.

Following the news of his mother’s condition, fans and cricketers alike have taken to social media to express their concern and extend their prayers. Several former teammates and current players posted messages of strength and support, hoping for her speedy recovery.

The BCCI has not yet named a temporary replacement, and Gambhir’s return to the team will depend entirely on his mother’s health. For now, the cricket board has confirmed that he will remain on leave until further notice.
