New Delhi, 3 January 2026:

The Management Education and Research Institute (MERI) in Janakpuri, New Delhi, achieved a significant milestone with the formal launch of its Department of Space Studies. The inaugural program was celebrated with great enthusiasm and academic fervour, demonstrating MERI’s commitment to futuristic and interdisciplinary education.

The programme commenced with the presentation of mementos by students, followed by the oath of MERI’s Code of Conduct, administered by Dr. Tapas Dey to all present members. Professor Lalit Aggrawal, Vice President, MERI Group of Institution, extended a warm welcome to the dignitaries, faculty members, students, and guests. The ceremonial lighting of the lamp symbolized the beginning of a new academic journey, after which the digital logo of the Department of Space Studies was unveiled.

Introducing the newly established department, the speakers underscored the increasing significance of space science in today’s world. They emphasized that the study of space science now extends beyond traditional science and engineering to include aspects such as technology, management, policy, and law. This interdisciplinary approach aligns with India’s emergence as a techno-economic power and promises to greatly benefit students by unlocking opportunities for groundbreaking careers in scientific research and technological advancement.

The keynote address was delivered by Lt Gen (Dr.) PJS Pannu (Retd), who elaborated on the vision of the Department of Space Studies. He stated that human beings are creators of knowledge and innovation, and therefore India must strive to become self-reliant in space technology rather than depending on other countries. He emphasized that the department aims to educate students on rocket development, the use of artificial intelligence, and advanced software development. Dr. Pannu expressed hope that in the coming years, such initiatives would contribute to per capita income growth, and envisioned MERI launching its own mission, tentatively referred to as Orbit 26–27.

In his interactive session, Dr. Pannu inspired students with insights on the application of space science across diverse fields, connecting scientific advancement to the development of civilization. He emphasized that India, as a great civilization, has the potential to excel in space science if the younger generation is encouraged to think innovatively and scientifically.

Addressing the gathering, Sh. I. P. Aggrawal, Chairman, MERI Group of Institution, stated that MERI aims to differentiate itself from other institutions by adopting visionary academic paths. Referring to Dr. Pannu’s guidance, he inspired students with the words: “Utho, jago, chalo aur chale raho jab tak aap apni manzil tak nahi pahunch jaate,” urging them to remain persistent until they achieve their goals.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Deepshikha Kalra, Dean, MERI, who expressed gratitude to all dignitaries, speakers, faculty members, staff, and students for making the event a success.

The event was graced by the presence of Prof. (Dr.) Rakesh Khurana, Advisor; Prof. (Dr.) Ramakant Dwivedi, Head CIS MERI; Smt. Kanta Aggrawal; Dr. Mamta Aggrawal; Sh. S. K. Aggrawal (CFO); and Sh.
