Several Delhi districts under highest-level weather warning
New Delhi | August 26, 2025
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday issued a red alert warning of heavy rainfall for several parts of Delhi and adjoining areas, including Gurugram in Haryana. The red alert was put into effect between 2:45 pm and 4:45 pm, based on IMD’s nowcast updates. According to officials, the latest radar images over Delhi showed intense convection activity over the western parts of the national capital and nearby districts of Haryana, prompting the weather authority to release the high-level alert.
The district-wise forecast on the IMD website highlighted that South Delhi, West Delhi, Northwest Delhi, Southwest Delhi, and New Delhi were placed under a red alert, signalling the possibility of very heavy rain in these areas for a brief period. Meanwhile, Southeast Delhi, East Delhi, and North Delhi were issued an orange warning, which suggests the likelihood of moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by potential disruptions. On the other hand, East Delhi, along with Uttar Pradesh’s Noida and Ghaziabad, remained under a yellow alert, which is the least severe among IMD’s warning categories but still indicates the possibility of isolated rain and thunder activity. Gurugram in Haryana also came under the red alert zone, considering the radar indications of heavy downpours.
Parts of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) experienced mild to moderate rainfall earlier in the day, which helped to alleviate some of the humidity. However, despite the heavy rain warnings, no major reports of severe waterlogging or traffic disruptions were recorded until late afternoon. Authorities urged residents in affected areas to stay alert, avoid unnecessary travel during peak rain hours, and monitor IMD updates for further advisories.
The weather department’s alert comes at a time when the NCR region has been witnessing frequent spells of rainfall in the last few days. Officials have emphasized that such short-term but intense showers are common during this period and can cause sudden waterlogging in low-lying areas if rain persists for long durations. With monsoon activity picking up, IMD has also advised civic bodies to remain on standby to address any emergency arising due to heavy rainfall.
