CSK has denied reports that MS Dhoni sought a major ownership stake in the franchise, calling the claims baseless. Here’s what we know about his CSK shares
New Delhi/Chennai: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has rejected reports that former captain MS Dhoni wanted to buy a large stake in the IPL franchise.
A senior CSK official told Cricbuzz that Dhoni never approached the franchise about buying a significant share. The official also said CSK had no information about Dhoni discussing such a proposal with N Srinivasan.
The clarification comes after reports in August claimed that Dhoni had sought a substantial percentage of ownership in CSK. However, no publicly available evidence confirms that the parties held formal negotiations.
CSK Rejects Dhoni Ownership Claims
The latest statement from CSK directly challenges reports that Dhoni wanted a major ownership role.
A senior CSK functionary told Cricbuzz that the franchise never discussed the matter with Dhoni. The official also said there was no information that Dhoni had raised the issue with N Srinivasan.
CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan had already rejected the reports on August 31. Speaking to PTI, he described the claims as “completely baseless.”
This makes one point clear: CSK does not accept the claim that Dhoni was negotiating for a major ownership stake.
Where Did the 25% Stake Claim Come From?
The controversy began after reports attributed to Cricblogger claimed that Dhoni had expressed interest in purchasing a stake in CSK.
Those reports claimed that Dhoni initially sought a 25% stake. Later, reports said the figure had dropped to 20%, while subsequent reports suggested an even smaller share. The reports also claimed that CSK made counteroffers during the discussions.
However, these numbers have not been independently verified.
There is also no publicly available evidence of a formal written proposal, agreement or completed transaction relating to a new large stake for Dhoni.
Therefore, the reported percentages should be treated as claims, not established facts.
Dhoni Does Own CSK Shares
While CSK has denied the major ownership story, Dhoni does have a genuine financial connection to the franchise.
Cricbuzz reported that Dhoni owns more than one lakh shares in CSK. He acquired those shares through private, off-market transactions.
This is different from owning a major stake.
CSK is an unlisted company, so its shares do not trade on a public stock exchange in the same way as listed companies. Shares can instead change hands through private transactions.
According to Cricbuzz, more than 30 crore shares are held by public shareholders, representing close to 40% of the company’s share capital. Dhoni’s holding therefore represents only a very small fraction of the overall equity.
How Much Is Dhoni’s Existing Stake Worth?
Cricbuzz estimated that Dhoni’s existing holding could be worth around ₹2.6 crore to ₹3 crore, based on the valuation levels of IPL franchises.
This valuation is only an estimate.Since CSK is not publicly traded, investors cannot use a daily stock-market price to calculate the exact value of Dhoni’s shares.
The key point is that Dhoni’s existing investment is tiny compared with the 18%, 20% or 25% stake mentioned in the unverified reports.
CSK’s Ownership Structure
After the franchise reorganisation, India Cements separated CSK into a new entity called Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited (CSKCL).
Cricbuzz has previously reported that the Srinivasan family retains a controlling interest in the franchise. The separation also resulted in CSK shares being distributed among eligible shareholders of India Cements.
This structure is important because reports about CSK ownership can be confusing. India Cements and the CSK franchise are now separate entities, so changes involving India Cements do not automatically mean a change in CSK’s ownership.
Aakash Chopra Questions the Original Story
Former India batter Aakash Chopra also questioned the credibility of the reports.
Chopra argued that a demand for a 25% stake would involve a huge financial commitment given CSK’s value. He also questioned the changing figures in the reports and described the story as possibly being “planted.”
His comments added another layer of doubt around the original claims.
However, Chopra’s comments are his own assessment and do not independently prove whether any private conversation took place.
Dhoni’s Future With CSK Remains a Separate Issue
The ownership speculation emerged at a time when questions about Dhoni’s future with CSK were already growing.
Dhoni did not play a single match during IPL 2026, as fitness issues kept him out of the season. His absence naturally led to questions about whether he would continue playing or take up another role within the franchise.
However, the question of Dhoni’s playing future should not be confused with the ownership rumours.
There is currently no verified evidence that Dhoni is negotiating to become a major shareholder in CSK.
What Is Confirmed?
Based on the available reporting, the situation can be divided into confirmed information and unverified claims.
Confirmed:
CSK has denied that Dhoni sought a major stake in the franchise.
CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan called the reports “completely baseless.”
Dhoni owns more than one lakh CSK shares.
His shares were acquired through private transactions.
His existing holding represents only a very small percentage of CSK’s total equity.
Not independently confirmed:
Dhoni asking for a 25% stake.
The reported reduction from 25% to 20% or other percentages.
CSK making counteroffers of 3%, 4% or 5.5%.
Any formal negotiations between Dhoni and CSK over a major ownership stake.
Claims that the alleged talks damaged Dhoni’s relationship with the franchise.
The Bottom Line
The claim that MS Dhoni wanted a major ownership stake in Chennai Super Kings remains unverified and has been directly denied by the franchise.
Dhoni does own shares in CSK, but the stake he currently holds is much smaller than the substantial stake described in the August reports.
There is currently no publicly verified evidence of any agreement or formal negotiations that would give Dhoni a significant new ownership position.
For now, the clearest conclusion is that Dhoni remains a CSK shareholder, but the franchise has denied his reported attempt to acquire a major stake, and no one should present the claim as an established fact.
