Turkey’s Diplomatic Betrayal: A Nation India Helped Turns Its Back in Time of Need
Despite India’s humanitarian aid during Turkey’s worst disaster, Ankara aligns with Pakistan, raising questions about its foreign policy and friendship with New Delhi

Turkey’s recent diplomatic alignment with Pakistan has unsettled many in India. This shift comes despite India’s humanitarian assistance during one of Turkey’s darkest hours—the devastating earthquake of 2023—when India extended crucial aid and support. The disregard for India’s goodwill has ignited strong backlash.
The sentiment stems from a deep sense of betrayal. In February 2023, India was among the first nations to respond with rescue teams, relief supplies, and medical aid under the initiative “Operation Dost.” The mission was hailed globally as a reflection of India’s commitment to humanitarian values.
However, Turkey has recently made diplomatic moves perceived in India as pro-Pakistan and hostile toward New Delhi’s interests. This includes Turkey’s vocal stance on Kashmir at international forums, echoing narratives promoted by Islamabad, and overt support for Pakistan where India expected neutrality.
The outrage on Indian social media reflects a demand for accountability and reevaluation of ties. The hashtag #BoycottTurkey, which began as an online trend, is now a movement, emphasizing a call for long-term strategic recalibration.
Experts argue Turkey’s behavior may stem from its desire to expand influence in the Muslim world, aligning with Pakistan as part of that ambition. Such alignment risks damaging longstanding diplomatic relationships with India.

“This is not about retaliation,” says geopolitical analyst Ramesh Kulkarni. “It’s about drawing a line. When you help someone selflessly and they side with your adversary, it becomes necessary to reassess trust.”
Public anger is driving calls to limit imports from Turkey, including consumer goods and tourism exchanges. Some Indian travel agencies have paused promotions for Turkish destinations, citing national sentiment concerns.
While New Delhi has not yet issued an official statement, growing domestic pressure is expected to influence policy decisions soon.
As the world watches, India faces the challenge of balancing diplomatic grace with strategic firmness. One thing is clear: the Indian public will no longer tolerate friendly facades hiding unfriendly alliances.
