Chandigarh on Alert: Air Raid Sirens Trigger Blackout and Safety Measures

9 May 2025, New Delhi

In the early hours of Friday morning, air raid sirens echoed across Chandigarh following an alert from the local Air Force Station regarding a potential aerial threat. The city’s administration promptly advised residents to remain indoors and avoid balconies and windows, particularly in sectors 45 to 47.

This alert came on the heels of a city-wide blackout enforced on Thursday night around 9:30 PM, during which sirens blared and power was intentionally cut off as a precautionary measure. The blackout was part of a broader civil defense initiative in response to escalating tensions between India and Pakistan.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court suspended its operations for the day, with only urgent matters being addressed by judges. Lawyers abstained from work, citing safety concerns.

In neighboring regions, similar measures were observed. Mohali enforced a two-hour blackout on Thursday night, prompted by intelligence reports suggesting a possible threat from Pakistan. Residents were instructed to turn off all lights and limit outdoor movement.

Panchkula experienced brief confusion as the blackout commenced without clear communication. The absence of a proper siren system led to delays in compliance, with many homes and streetlights remaining illuminated well past the alert. As information spread through social media and neighborhood messages, more residents gradually turned off their lights.

These precautionary measures follow recent escalations along the India-Pakistan border, including drone and missile attacks. India has reported thwarting multiple aerial threats, while Pakistan has denied initiating any attacks.

Authorities have urged citizens to remain vigilant and adhere to safety advisories as the situation continues to develop.
