Former Indian Navy officer and international yachting champion Homi Motivala sets a remarkable example for youth through his achievements in sports, service, and coaching

The life journey of Commander Homi Dady Motivala, former officer of the Indian Navy, stands as an inspiring testament to excellence in national service, sports, and mentorship. Born on June 18, 1958, Homi Motivala dedicated his life not only to protecting the nation but also to bringing international glory to India through the sport of yachting.
He completed his schooling at Bombay Scottish High School and later joined the prestigious National Defence Academy (NDA). After graduating in 1978, he was commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1979. Alongside his distinguished naval service, he pursued his passion for sailing and soon became one of the country’s leading yachtsmen.
Commander Motivala represented India in yachting at several national and international competitions. He led the Yachting Association of India’s National Team Championship victories in 1983, 1984, 1986, 1987, 1990, and 1991. His most notable sporting accomplishments include winning bronze medals in the Enterprise Class with partner PK Garg at the 1990 Asian Games in Beijing and the 1994 Asian Games in Hiroshima. The duo also clinched the gold medal at the 1993 World Enterprise Championship held in Zimbabwe — a historic moment for Indian sailing.
In recognition of his outstanding contribution to sports, Motivala was awarded the Arjuna Award in 1993. He was subsequently honored with India’s highest sporting award, the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna (now Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award) in 1994–95. The same year, his bravery and commitment were acknowledged with the prestigious Shaurya Chakra, underlining his multifaceted legacy.

After retiring from competitive sailing, his dedication to Indian sports remained unwavering. From 1999 to 2008, he served as the Chief National Coach of the Yachting Association of India (YAI). Under his guidance, India delivered an exceptional performance at the 2002 Asian Games, for which he was honored with the Dronacharya Award, the highest recognition for sports coaching in India. His leadership brought structure, vision, and international success to Indian sailing.
Motivala eventually rose to the rank of Captain in the Navy before retiring in 2008. Post-retirement, he continued contributing to the sport by launching a successful business that supplies yachting equipment, thus blending entrepreneurship with his lifelong passion for sailing.
