New Delhi: June 11, 2025

India has registered an uptick in COVID-19 infections, with 6,800 cases during the past 24 hours, according to the Union Health Ministry. The spike is led by Kerala, which is accounting for more than 2,200 active cases, followed by Gujarat and Karnataka, which have each reported more than 120.

Highlights at a glance

• Three deaths attributed to COVID-19 have been confirmed – one each in: Kerala, Delhi and Jharkhand: raising fresh concerns of a possible resurgence.

• Culpable Omicron subvariants LF.7 and XFG are practically the two strains, shown through their footprint, but are said to be less severe based on reports of transmission.

• Health Minister Veena George from Kerala has advised senior citizens, and those persons at risk due to comorbidity, to take more precautions and wear a face mask in crowded situations.

• Nationwide, genomic surveillance has been increased to follow the mutations leading to the emergence of variants, while experts have assured the continued integrity of the testing infrastructure.

Government Preparedness

No universal restrictions have been put back into place, but state authorities are watching closely for any changes in local trends. The Centre has instructed states to ramp up testing, continue to do genomic sequence in a timely manner, and to reinforce public health messages around mask use and hygiene.

Looking Ahead

With the recent increase in cases, there is a continued focus on preventative action and early detection. Authorities continue to monitor admission rates in hospitals and are prepared to react very quickly if required.
