“Mr. President, F**k Off” – Danish Politician’s Shout at Trump During Greenland Debate goes viral

A Danish lawmaker’s blunt remark to Donald Trump during a European Parliament debate on Greenland has gone viral, sparking global debate and diplomatic tension.

New Delhi: A heated exchange in the European Parliament has captured global attention after a Danish lawmaker used unusually blunt language to push back against US President Donald Trump’s renewed claims over Greenland. The sharp remarks, delivered during a formal debate and caught on camera, quickly went viral, fuelling online debate and highlighting rising diplomatic tensions between Europe and the United States over sovereignty and security in the Arctic region.

What Happened in the European Parliament

The incident occurred on January 20 during a European Parliament discussion on the EU’s response to Donald Trump’s recent statements on Greenland. Anders Vistisen, a 43-year-old Danish MEP from the Dansk Folkeparti and chief whip of the Patriots for Europe group, delivered a sharply worded speech.

Addressing the Parliament, Vistisen said:
Greenland has been part of the Danish kingdom for 800 years. It is an integrated country. It is not for sale. Let me put this in words you might understand: Mr President, f*** off.”

His words immediately drew attention inside the chamber.

European Parliament Vice President Nicolae Ștefănuță stepped in and stopped the speech, saying, “I’m sorry to interrupt you, but using cuss words and inappropriate language is not acceptable in this chamber.”

Vistisen stood by his remarks and responded that “the only language Trump understands is direct language, and the only response he understands is a strong one from the EU.” He added that he had used similar wording in January 2025 when Trump previously floated the idea of turning Greenland into a US territory.

Trump’s Remarks on Greenland

The discussion came after fresh remarks made by Donald Trump on January 19, 2026. While speaking to the media, Trump said, “We have to have Greenland,” and linked his claim to national security concerns, pointing to China and Russia’s growing presence in the Arctic.

Soon after, Trump shared an AI-generated image on his social media platform, Truth Social. The image showed Trump along with Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio placing a US flag on Greenland. He also suggested that the United States could use tools such as tariffs, military action, or other forms of pressure to push Denmark on the issue.

Trump made these comments while travelling to Davos for the 2026 World Economic Forum. Media reports later said his flight faced an electrical problem during the journey.

Background of the Greenland Issue

Trump’s interest in Greenland is not new. In 2019, he suggested buying the island, which Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen called “absurd.” Trump later cancelled a planned state visit to Denmark.

Greenland has a population of around 56,000 people. It has been part of Denmark for more than 800 years and gained self-rule in 2009. The island hosts the US Thule Air Base and is rich in minerals. Its location is also strategically important due to Arctic shipping routes affected by climate change.

Greenland’s Prime Minister, Múte Egede, has repeatedly said that Greenland is “not for sale” and that its future will be decided by its people.

Political Impact and Global Reaction

Trump’s comments have caused unease among European leaders and within NATO. At Davos 2026, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and French President Emmanuel Macron discussed stability, trade, and rule of law amid what some leaders called growing uncertainty and “tariff chaos.”

Political analysts described Trump’s approach as aggressive and warned that it could damage long-standing alliances and raise the risk of economic conflict over control of the Arctic.

Viral Reaction Online

Videos of Vistisen’s speech spread rapidly across X, Instagram, and TikTok, gaining millions of views. Some users praised him for standing up to Trump, while others said the language was too extreme.

Danish officials supported the broader message, saying the time when powerful nations could buy or claim territories is long over. Pro-Trump supporters criticised Vistisen online, while many users welcomed seeing a foreign leader speak so directly.

Media outlets called the moment bold and shocking. Speaking later to CNN’s Erin Burnett, Vistisen said his words reflected how “unacceptable” he believes Trump’s behaviour toward Greenland has been.

With discussions continuing at Davos and strong positions on both sides, the Greenland issue remains sensitive. The episode has once again highlighted growing friction between the US and Europe and raised questions about future relations.
