At least 21 people are dead and dozens injured after two high-speed trains collided near Córdoba, Spain. The deadly crash has sparked a nationwide investigation and major rail disruptions.
Madrid, Spain: The nation of Spain has been hit hard by the loss of life and the number of people injured from a train accident that involved two high-speed trains near Southern Spain. This was referred to by officials as one of the most serious rail accidents in Spain in over a decade. It occurred on Sunday evening and has left the nation in mourning.
The incident happened near the town of Adamuz in Córdoba province, a quiet area that suddenly found itself at the centre of a national tragedy. The crash has also raised troubling questions about safety on Europe’s generally reliable high-speed rail network.
How the Accident Happened
The collision took place at around 7:45 p.m. local time on January 18, 2026, along the AVE high-speed rail corridor that links Madrid with southern Spain.
According to Spain’s rail operator Adif, a train travelling from Málaga to Madrid was carrying 317 passengers when it derailed without warning. For reasons that are still not clear, the train crossed onto the opposite track and crashed head-on into another high-speed train that was travelling from Madrid to Huelva.
The impact struck with severe force. The second train derailed, and the crash threw several of its carriages down an embankment. Rescue teams arriving at the scene saw twisted metal, shattered coaches, and widespread destruction.
Casualties and Rescue Efforts
Transport Minister Óscar Puente confirmed that the death toll rose to 21 after rescue teams completed operations early on Monday, January 19, 2026. By midnight, rescuers had pulled all survivors from the wreckage.
In an official update, Puente said that hospitals are treating around 30 passengers in serious condition. Emergency services in Andalucía reported that the crash injured 73 to 100 people, including 15 to 30 in critical condition.
Despite early indications, the death toll of persons involved will continue to increase, as treating physicians continue to closely monitor all victims currently fighting for their lives.
Response of Government and Other Emergency Services
Following the tragedy, Spanish Prime Minister Sanchez expressed his personal grief at the tragedy and stated that it was a “night of profound suffering” for Spain. The Prime Minister also shared on social media that his thoughts are with the families of those who have died, and he expressed his gratitude to emergency responders for their quick and diligent work.
Firefighters, police officers, paramedics, and rescue teams rushed to the site and worked through the night. The Interior Ministry confirmed the casualty figures and said that psychological support is also being provided to survivors and to families who have lost loved ones.
Cause of the Accident
Authorities have not yet identified the precise cause of the derailment but have indicated that they currently see no evidence of criminal activity.
Adif and various law enforcement agencies, through investigation, are considering a number of possibilities including mechanical failure of the train, the condition of the railway tracks, and the possibility of human error.
However, officials have cautioned that it is still too soon to make any conclusions.
This is the deadliest rail accident in Spain since the 2013 Santiago de Compostela crash, which killed 79 people and led to sweeping changes in rail safety rules nationwide.
Rail Services Disrupted
After the crash, authorities suspended high-speed rail services between Madrid and southern Spain, causing major disruption for travellers. Thousands of passengers faced cancellations and long delays, especially at Madrid’s main railway station.
Rail officials said they were arranging alternative transport while emergency crews continued clearing debris from the site. Images from the scene showed badly damaged train cars and rescue workers assisting injured passengers to safety.
Public Reaction and Solidarity
The tragedy has sparked an outpouring of grief across Spain. People have flooded social media with messages of sympathy and solidarity for the victims and their families.
One user wrote on X, “Really awful and tragic news. Mis pensamientos están con todos los afectados,” a sentiment that echoed the mood of the nation.
While the investigation continues, authorities are asking the public to remain patient as they focus on helping victims and determining exactly what happened. Officials will release more details in the coming days about the number of casualties, the condition of the injured, and the status of rail services.
To stay informed, authorities encourage the public to rely on official updates from the government and rail authorities. They will continue to update the story as new information becomes available.
