26 June 2025, New Delhi

Actor Suhail Nayyar has shared a touching memory of the late veteran actor Rishi Kapoor from the sets of ‘Sharmaji Namkeen’, revealing a moment that showcased Kapoor’s generosity and deep commitment to the craft—even off-camera.

In a recent interview with IANS, Suhail Nayyar shared a memorable moment from the shoot of an emotional father-son scene. Although Rishi Kapoor had finished his part and the crew had called for pack-up, he chose to stay on set after learning that Suhail’s close-up was still pending.

Instead, he stood behind the camera and delivered his lines live, allowing Suhail to respond with genuine emotion. Suhail noted that this simple gesture had a profound impact on his performance. He believes that the scene, as it appears in the film, resonates so deeply with audiences precisely because of the authenticity Rishi Kapoor brought to it—even when he wasn’t on screen.

‘Sharmaji Namkeen’ – Rishi Kapoor’s Final Film

Sharmaji Namkeen holds a special place in Indian cinema as Rishi Kapoor’s final film. He could not complete the shooting due to his untimely passing, after which actor Paresh Rawal stepped in to finish the remaining portions. The film also stars Juhi Chawla, Satish Kaushik, and Suhail Nayyar in key roles.

The story revolves around B.G. Sharma, a retired man living in Delhi’s Subhash Nagar with his two sons. After retirement, Sharma discovers a passion for cooking and begins catering at kitty parties, leading to familial tensions. The film delicately explores themes of aging, loneliness, dignity of labour, and intergenerational conflict—infused with light-hearted humour and warmth.

Suhail Nayyar’s recollection offers more than just a behind-the-scenes anecdote; it serves as a tribute to Rishi Kapoor’s character—an actor who didn’t just perform but empowered others around him. Even when the spotlight was no longer on him, Kapoor remained present, generous, and deeply human.
