New Delhi: A family dispute in Uttar Pradesh’s Mainpuri district has turned into a major talking point after a widow and mother of five said she wants to live with and marry a young man who is already married to her sister’s daughter. The young man has also told police that he is ready to leave his wife and take responsibility for the woman’s children.

The unusual case came to light in mid-September 2026. It involves a significant age gap, a relationship between relatives by marriage, strong opposition from the woman’s children and relatives, and two adults who have refused to end their relationship despite family pressure and counselling at a police station.

Who Are the People Involved?

The woman is around 35 years old, although some local reports have put her age closer to 45. She is a widow and has five children. Her husband died around two years ago. She lives with her children in the Ghiror police station area of Mainpuri.

Her sister lives in the same neighbourhood. Around two years ago, the sister’s daughter married a young man from the Kurawali/Sonai Ashokpur area. This made the young man the woman’s mausiya damad, or her sister’s son-in-law.

Most detailed reports put the man’s age at around 20, although some earlier reports mentioned 26. He has been married for about two years. After his marriage, he regularly visited his in-laws’ home and also visited the widow’s house.

According to family members and statements later given to police, the relationship between the widow and the young man gradually became closer.
