New Delhi: OpenAI has started rolling out GPT-6 Astra, its most capable and aligned large language model so far. The company says the new model brings major improvements in computer use, professional work, software engineering, science and cybersecurity.

OpenAI released Astra in a limited preview on September 3, 2026. The company plans to expand access to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users, as well as users of the OpenAI API, Microsoft Azure and AWS Bedrock, over the following days.

OpenAI calls Astra “the world’s most intelligent and aligned model.” Some company leaders, including President Greg Brockman, have described the launch as the beginning of an “AGI era.” Astra follows the GPT-5.6 family, which includes Sol, Terra and Luna. OpenAI also delayed parts of its development because of additional safety work after an incident involving AI agents in July 2026.

Software Engineering and Coding

Astra shows strong performance in software engineering and coding tests. It performs well on Terminal-Bench and similar evaluations.

Cached input costs $1, while cache writes cost $12.50.

Longer contexts that use more than roughly 272,000 input tokens cost more. OpenAI generally charges twice the normal input and cache rates and 1.5 times the normal output rate for these longer contexts.

OpenAI offers discounts through Batch and Flex modes. Users who choose Fast mode pay more in exchange for higher speed.

ChatGPT users access Astra through their existing plan allowances, although OpenAI also offers additional credits.

Azure follows similar pricing, although regional pricing differences may apply.

Astra costs more per token than some earlier models. However, OpenAI says users can spend less on individual complex tasks because Astra can complete many tasks with fewer tokens.
