IPL 2026: Kohli Breaks Rohit Record as RCB Crush CSK by 43 Runs

Virat Kohli broke Rohit Sharma’s record for the most T20 runs against a single opponent as RCB posted a historic 250/3 to thrash CSK by 43 runs at Chinnaswamy

Bengaluru: IPL 2026 clash at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium unfolded as a historic encounter. Royal Challengers Bengaluru beat Chennai Super Kings by 43 runs in Match 11 of the season, but the scoreline alone doesn’t begin to tell the story.

This was a night when records tumbled, when Tim David played one of the most destructive innings this ground has ever witnessed, and — above all — when Virat Kohli quietly, almost casually, erased yet another name from the record books to claim a milestone entirely his own.

RCB finished on 250 for 3, the highest total ever posted against CSK in IPL history. CSK, chasing 251, were bundled out for 207 in 19.4 overs. It was clinical, commanding, and at times simply cruel.

Kohli’s Historic Moment

Before Tim David had faced a ball, and before Rajat Patidar had launched a six, the evening had already delivered its headline moment.

Virat Kohli walked out to open with Phil Salt. He needed only a few runs to break Rohit Sharma’s record for most T20 runs against a single opponent.

Rohit had set that mark just a week earlier against Kolkata Knight Riders. For a brief time, he had taken back a record Kohli once owned.

It did not stay with Rohit for long.

Inside the first over, Virat Kohli found the boundary. As a result, the record was his.

His tally against CSK now stands at 1,174 runs. Notably, this is the most any player has scored against a single opponent in T20 cricket.

This was his 36th match against the Yellow Brigade. Across these games, he has registered 10 fifty-plus scores. In fact, his record against one team is unmatched in the format’s history.

However, his stay at the crease was brief. He was dismissed for 28 off 18 balls, an innings that included 2 fours and a six. Anshul Kamboj took the catch in the fourth over, with the score at 37 for 1.

Nevertheless, as Kohli walked off, the crowd rose in applause. The ovation reflected not just the runs he scored, but the milestone he had just achieved.

RCB’s Batting Masterclass

With the record safely in the bank, RCB’s batting lineup set about the business of building something enormous.
Phil Salt provided the early thrust with 46 off 30 balls at the top of the order. When Kohli departed, Devdutt Padikkal stepped in and played exactly the innings his team needed — composed, aggressive when required, and ultimately finishing with a fluent 50 off 29 balls that kept the scoreboard moving without ever allowing CSK’s bowlers to settle.

But it was the final five overs that turned a very good innings into a record-breaking one.

Captain Rajat Patidar was first to ignite, smashing 48 not out off just 19 balls — an innings of six sixes that announced the death-over intent. Then Tim David took the bat, and what followed belongs in the highlight reels of this IPL season.

The 70 he made off 25 deliveries — eight sixes, three fours, a strike rate of 280 — was not so much batting as it was demolition. Together, Patidar and David added 99 runs in 36 balls. RCB’s last five overs produced 97 runs. CSK’s bowlers, who had come into the evening with plans and variations and carefully prepared strategies, had none of the answers.

Shivam Dube, Jamie Overton, and Anshul Kamboj each picked up one wicket. On a Chinnaswamy pitch that had no interest in helping anyone who wasn’t holding a bat, that was about as good as it was going to get.

CSK’s Chase — Three Overs, Three Down

Chasing 251, CSK needed a near-perfect start. However, they got the exact opposite.

Right from the outset, Jacob Duffy struck with ferocious intent, removing Ruturaj Gaikwad for 7 and Sanju Samson for 9 in the opening exchanges. As a result, by the time the third wicket fell, the scoreboard read 30 for 3 inside three overs. Consequently, the asking rate had already climbed to a level that made the mathematics of the chase feel more like a theoretical exercise than a realistic pursuit.

Nevertheless, Sarfaraz Khan deserves credit for refusing to surrender. His 50 off 25 balls was the kind of counter-attacking innings that briefly made you wonder — if only for a moment — whether a miracle might be in the works. Meanwhile, Prashant Veer added 43 off 29, providing some much-needed stability. Furthermore, Jamie Overton’s lower-order cameo of 37 off 16 ensured CSK pushed past 200 and, at the very least, avoided the full psychological blow of a sub-200 collapse.

Even so, 207 all out in 19.4 overs was never going to be enough.

On the bowling front, Bhuvneshwar Kumar led RCB’s attack with 3 for 41, delivering a masterclass in hitting the right areas on a flat deck. In addition, Abhinandan Singh and Krunal Pandya picked up two wickets each, maintaining constant pressure. Earlier, Duffy’s double strike had already set the tone, from which CSK never truly recovered. Finally, the last wicket — Matt Henry caught by Phil Salt off Abhinandan Singh — fell in the 20th over, bringing Chennai’s evening to an underwhelming close.

What the Numbers Tell Us

250/3 — RCB’s total is not just the highest ever posted against CSK in IPL history. It is one of the most imposing team performances in the early weeks of this season, a statement of batting depth from top to bottom of the order.

1,174 — Kohli’s runs against CSK, a number that now stands alone at the top of a record that has never been more keenly contested. No batter in T20 history has scored more against a single opponent.

Four in a row — RCB have now beaten CSK in four consecutive matches, something that has never happened before in the history of what is one of the IPL’s most storied rivalries.

Third defeat from three — For CSK, the picture is concerning. Three games, three losses, bottom of the table. The questions being asked in the Chennai camp right now are legitimate ones.

Player of the Match: Tim David (RCB)

70 off 25 balls | 8 sixes | 3 fours | Strike Rate: 280*
On a night when history was being made at the other end of the innings, Tim David had the good sense to make some of his own. His was the knock that turned 200 into 250, that turned a strong position into an unassailable one. Rightly named Player of the Match, and perhaps the most feared death-over batter operating in T20 cricket at this moment.
