South Africa’s Dewald Brevis couldn’t have asked for a better Test debut. The 22-year-old batting prodigy marked his arrival in red-ball cricket with an electrifying half-century, scoring 51 runs off just 38 deliveries against Zimbabwe at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo.

Brevis, often dubbed “Baby AB” for his aggressive shot-making reminiscent of AB de Villiers, brought his natural flair into the longer format. Walking in with South Africa wobbling at 98 for 4, Brevis turned the tide with fearless strokeplay. He raced to his maiden Test fifty in just 38 balls, finishing the milestone with a thrilling sequence of 6, 0, 6, 6 that had the Bulawayo crowd buzzing.

His innings, which included three boundaries and four sixes, wasn’t just flashy—it was timely. South Africa needed momentum after a shaky top order collapse, and Brevis delivered exactly that. Though his innings ended shortly after reaching his fifty—caught off Blessing Muzarabani—the damage had been done, and the Proteas found their footing.

Brevis’s debut performance is the latest chapter in a rise that’s been closely watched since the 2022 U-19 World Cup, where he topped the run charts. While his exploits in T20 leagues earned him global fame, it was his consistent run in domestic first-class cricket—where he averaged over 44 in the last season—that earned him this red-ball opportunity.

Joining him at the crease was fellow debutant Lhuan-dre Pretorius, who played a contrasting but equally vital role. Pretorius notched a composed fifty of his own, helping steady the innings through a 70-run stand with Brevis that laid the foundation for a respectable first innings total.

The Proteas are currently in a transitional phase, with several veterans stepping aside. Brevis’s confident start adds excitement to South Africa’s evolving Test side and suggests that the future of the team might be in very capable hands.

With the first day still unfolding in Bulawayo, South Africa will be hoping to capitalise on this solid middle-order recovery. But one thing is already certain—Dewald Brevis has arrived, and he has done it in style.
