BJP announces fresh state in-charges across states and UTs, with Smriti Irani handling Haryana and Chhattisgarh in the latest organisational reshuffle
New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday announced a comprehensive list of state and Union Territory In-Charges and Co-In-Charges as part of its ongoing Organisational Reshuffle. Former Union minister and National General Secretary Smriti Irani has been appointed Prabhari for both Haryana and Chhattisgarh, while Harish Dwivedi has been assigned responsibility for Bihar and Karnataka. The appointments, announced by Party President Nitin Nabin, cover 28 states and Eight UTs and take effect immediately.
BJP announces sweeping in-charge appointments across states
The latest appointments assign BJP organisational responsibilities across a wide range of states and Union Territories. In addition, the party has named both prabharis and sah-prabharis for several states, while some Union Territories have only one in-charge.
Among the key appointments, the list includes major states such as Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Kerala and Jammu & Kashmir. At the same time, the BJP has also announced responsibilities for northeastern states, including Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
The announcement comes after BJP president Nitin Nabin carried out a major overhaul of the party’s national organisation in August. Following that reshuffle, the party began announcing state-level responsibilities, initially covering Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Gujarat. Now, with the latest appointments, the organisational changes have expanded to a wider group of states and Union Territories.
Smriti Irani: two states, one leader
Smriti Irani is among the most prominent names in the latest list. The BJP has appointed her in-charge of Chhattisgarh and Haryana, giving her organisational responsibility for two states.
Siddharth Shambhu will serve as co-in-charge in Chhattisgarh, while Dr Bhola Singh will assist Irani in Haryana.
Irani’s dual assignment stands out because most leaders in the visible list have received responsibility for one state or Union Territory. Her appointment also comes shortly after she returned to the BJP’s national organisational team as a national general secretary in August.

How this fits into the bigger August 2026 reshuffle
The September appointments follow the BJP’s national organisational changes announced on August 17. Nitin Nabin announced a new team of national office-bearers, appointing Smriti Irani as national general secretary and Ram Madhav as national vice-president. Sunil Bansal is among the national general secretaries retained in the new team.
The party moved to state-level appointments the following day. On August 18, it named Vinod Tawde as Uttar Pradesh in-charge, Satish Poonia as Punjab in-charge and Tarun Chugh as Gujarat in-charge.
At the time, reports said the BJP would announce in-charges for other states later. The September 23 announcement represents a broader follow-up to that first round.
What’s still unclear
The biggest gap is the incomplete nature of the available list. The document ends with Lakshadweep, so the remaining state and Union Territory appointments cannot be confirmed from the available material.
Satish Poonia’s current assignment remains unclear. The August list named him as Punjab in-charge, while the September list assigned him to Jammu & Kashmir.
The BJP’s latest organisational communication is needed to confirm whether he will continue with both responsibilities or whether the September appointment replaces his earlier Punjab role.
The party’s full list should settle these points when it releases the remaining appointments or a consolidated version.
