With J.P. Nadda’s term ended, the party eyes strong female leadership ahead of key state elections; RSS signals support for historic move
4 July 2025, New Delhi
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is likely to make history by appointing its first-ever woman national president, with prominent names such as Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Andhra Pradesh BJP chief D Purandeswari, and Mahila Morcha national president Vanathi Srinivasan emerging as key contenders. The announcement of J.P. Nadda’s successor—whose extended tenure concluded in June 2024—is expected later this month.
The timing of the move is considered both politically strategic and symbolically significant. With upcoming state elections in Maharashtra, Haryana, and Delhi, the BJP is also working to deepen its connect with women voters—a segment that has played a growing role in recent electoral outcomes. Elevating a woman to the party’s top post would reinforce the BJP’s message of women’s empowerment, especially after its push for the Women’s Reservation Bill.
Profiles of the Frontrunners
Among the contenders, Nirmala Sitharaman stands out due to her national stature, key cabinet portfolios, and broad organisational support. D Purandeswari, a senior leader from Andhra Pradesh and daughter of former CM N.T. Rama Rao, brings with her a strong southern presence and administrative experience. Vanathi Srinivasan, currently an MLA from Coimbatore and head of BJP’s women’s wing, is known for her grassroots mobilisation and work among women in Tamil Nadu.
RSS Signals Backing for a Historic Shift
Interestingly, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS)—the party’s ideological mentor—has reportedly expressed support for the idea of a woman leading the organisation. While traditionally conservative, the RSS appears to view the move as an opportunity to project a modern, inclusive image at a crucial political juncture.

The BJP has already completed internal organisational elections in over half of its state units, meeting a constitutional requirement before a national president can be appointed. According to party insiders, the leadership selection is expected to be finalised through consensus, with a decision likely by mid-July.
If appointed, the new national president will have the crucial responsibility of leading the BJP through major state polls and helping shape its long-term vision for the 2029 general elections. Beyond electoral strategy, the decision is poised to redefine the party’s leadership narrative, marking a turning point in its organisational history.
