A red alert was declared in Amritsar early Saturday morning after a fleet of drones originating from Pakistan was detected near a sensitive military zone. The Indian Army swiftly responded, shooting down several drones hovering close to the Khasa Cantonment area, averting what officials described as a serious cross-border provocation.
According to local authorities, the incident occurred around 5 a.m., prompting the immediate activation of high-level security protocols. Deputy Commissioner of Amritsar issued a public warning, stating that sirens could go off at any moment, and advised residents to remain inside and away from open windows.
“We are currently under a red alert. Please remain calm, stay indoors, and wait for further official communication,” the Deputy Commissioner said in a recorded message shared with the public.
This emergency warning came just an hour after a temporary green alert had been issued at 6 a.m., highlighting the rapid escalation of the situation.
Indian defense sources confirmed that multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were intercepted and destroyed using anti-drone systems deployed along the border. The type and payload capacity of the drones are under technical review, though preliminary assessments suggest they were capable of surveillance and potentially hostile actions.
The drone intrusion comes amid rising hostilities between India and Pakistan following the launch of Operation Sindoor, a strategic retaliatory mission undertaken by India in response to a recent terror attack in Pahalgam. Indian forces have been on high alert ever since, particularly across border zones in Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, and Rajasthan.
In a related development, debris from a downed drone reportedly caused a fire in Punjab’s Firozpur district, injuring three civilians. Emergency teams were deployed immediately, and efforts are underway to assess further risks in civilian areas.

Security has been ramped up across border districts with increased aerial surveillance and rapid deployment forces monitoring for any fresh incursions. Defense officials reiterated that the armed forces are fully prepared to counter any aggression while maintaining restraint.
As tensions grow, international observers and global powers have urged both nations to avoid escalation and prioritize diplomatic channels. However, Indian officials have emphasized that national security will not be compromised under any circumstances.
