In a major move to enhance onboard security and passenger confidence, Indian Railways has announced the installation of high-tech CCTV cameras in all passenger coaches and locomotives across the country. The decision follows successful pilot trials conducted in the Northern Railway zone and reflects Indian Railways’ broader push toward smart and secure travel.

The new surveillance system will be implemented in a privacy-conscious manner, with cameras installed only in public sections of coaches, such as near the doors, ensuring that passenger privacy is not compromised.

Strategic Camera Placement: 4 in Coaches, 6 in Locomotives

According to the plan, each passenger coach will be equipped with four dome-type CCTV cameras, with two installed near each entry/exit door. Locomotives will have six strategically placed cameras—one each on the front, rear, and both sides of the engine, plus two dome cameras in the front and rear cabs. Additionally, each locomotive will be equipped with two desk-mounted microphones to capture audio data.

Advanced Technology with AI Integration Under IndiaAI Mission

Railway officials confirmed that the cameras being deployed are STQC-certified and equipped with the latest technology. They are capable of capturing clear footage even at high speeds (over 100 km/h) and perform efficiently in low-light conditions.

In a high-level review meeting held on Saturday, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Minister of State Ravneet Singh Bittu, along with senior Railway Board officials, assessed the implementation plan. Minister Vaishnaw also directed that this initiative be integrated with the IndiaAI Mission, enabling AI-based analysis of video data to detect and respond to potential threats in real time.

Safer Journeys, Stronger Public Confidence

The Railway Ministry emphasized that this initiative is not just about security but is also aimed at offering a modern, safe, and trustworthy travel experience to passengers. By monitoring suspicious activities and curbing antisocial behavior, the CCTV system is expected to be a powerful deterrent against onboard crime.

This decision marks a significant shift in Indian Railways’ focus — from just physical infrastructure to smart, tech-enabled safety solutions. The integration of AI with surveillance will not only enhance crime prevention but also help build greater public trust in railway travel as India moves toward smarter, safer transportation.
