DUSU Election Result 2026: ABVP’s Yash Dabas won president, Riya Chhawdi secretary and Lakshya Raj Singh joint secretary, while Deepanshu Shokeen won VP
New Delhi: The Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) Election Result 2026 has been declared, with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) winning three of the four central panel posts. ABVP candidates Yash Dabas, Riya Chhawdi and Lakshya Raj Singh won the president, secretary and joint secretary posts respectively.
Independent candidate Deepanshu Shokeen won the vice-president post. The results left the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) without a win on any of the four central posts.
Delhi University conducted voting for the DUSU Election 2026 on September 18, while officials counted the votes on September 19 at the Multipurpose Hall of the University Sports Stadium in North Campus.
The university recorded a voter turnout of around 40.46 per cent, slightly higher than the 39.45 per cent turnout recorded in 2025.

ABVP secured the president, secretary and joint secretary positions, while independent candidate Deepanshu Shokeen won the vice-president seat.
Yash Dabas Wins DUSU President Election
ABVP’s Yash Dabas defeated NSUI candidate Vijay Shankar Meena in the DUSU president election. AISA-SFI candidate Ananya Raturi also contested the post.
Dabas secured 24,576 votes, while Meena received 22,523 votes. Dabas therefore won the president post by 2,053 votes.
The contest remained close during the counting process. The lead changed several times as officials counted votes from different rounds. Meena even moved ahead by a narrow margin during the counting before Dabas regained the lead.
Dabas is pursuing a master’s degree in the Department of Buddhist Studies at Delhi University. ABVP has also highlighted his association with tennis and his participation in ITF competitions in Spain, Australia and Serbia.
Independent Candidate Deepanshu Shokeen Wins Vice-President Post
Independent candidate Deepanshu Shokeen emerged as the winner of the DUSU vice-president election.
Shokeen received 30,615 votes, while ABVP’s Ishu Maurya secured 16,910 votes. NSUI candidate Veer Chatrath received 4,313 votes.
Shokeen defeated Maurya by 13,705 votes, making the vice-president contest one of the most notable results of the 2026 DUSU election.
Shokeen contested the election as an independent candidate instead of contesting on a traditional student organisation’s panel. Reports during the campaign also highlighted his distinctive campaigning style and focus on student-related issues.
Riya Chhawdi Wins DUSU Secretary Post
ABVP candidate Riya Chhawdi won the secretary post. She faced NSUI’s Namrata Chaudhary as her main challenger, while AISA-SFI’s Stanzin Deskiong also contested the election.
Chhawdi received 21,650 votes, compared with 14,869 votes for Chaudhary. She won the secretary post by 6,781 votes.
Chhawdi studies in the BA Programme at Sri Aurobindo College. She has also represented her college in inter-college basketball competitions.
Lakshya Raj Singh Wins Joint Secretary Election
ABVP’s Lakshya Raj Singh won the joint secretary post after a closely contested election.
Singh received 16,615 votes. SCS candidate Vishesh Yadav secured 15,778 votes, while NSUI’s Gopal Chaudhary received 15,206 votes.
Singh defeated Vishesh Yadav by 837 votes, making the joint secretary election the closest contest among the four central posts.
The lead changed several times during the counting process. Vishesh Yadav and Gopal Chaudhary both led at different stages before Singh secured the final advantage.
Singh is studying law at Delhi University’s Campus Law Centre. According to ABVP, he has represented India in handball at international competitions.
Student Housing, Safety and Jobs Among Key DUSU Election Issues
The DUSU Election 2026 campaign focused on several issues directly connected with student life. Student housing, campus safety, fees, placements, internships, attendance, transportation and university facilities featured prominently in the election debate.
Student accommodation became a particularly important issue after the collapse of a PG building in Satya Niketan. The incident killed seven people, including five Delhi University students. The tragedy brought renewed attention to the availability of safe and affordable accommodation for students.
ABVP included student housing, campus safety, academic reforms and career opportunities in its election agenda. Other student groups also raised issues related to accommodation, fees, student facilities and campus infrastructure.
Social media also played a growing role in the campaign. Candidates and student organisations used platforms such as Instagram to reach voters and promote their campaigns. Reports also discussed caste and regional mobilisation and the distribution of campaign material during the election.
DUSU Election 2026 Records 40.46% Voter Turnout
Delhi University held DUSU voting on September 18, 2026. The university recorded a voter turnout of around 40.46 per cent.
More than 1.51 lakh students were eligible to vote in the election. Delhi University conducted polling in two shifts to accommodate students attending morning and evening classes.
The 2026 turnout increased from the approximately 39.45 per cent turnout recorded in 2025.
However, not every Delhi University student could vote in the DUSU election. Students enrolled through the School of Open Learning and the Non-Collegiate Women’s Education Board were not included in the DUSU electoral process. A student organisation also protested over voting rights for these students.
ABVP and NSUI Trade Allegations Before DUSU Polls
The DUSU election campaign also saw allegations and counter-allegations between ABVP and NSUI.
ABVP alleged that people associated with NSUI reached a residential location connected with its members and attacked them. NSUI, in turn, accused ABVP members of targeting the residences of its candidates Vijay Shankar Meena and Gopal Chaudhary.
Both organisations called for police action over the allegations.
The campaign also drew attention to the use of outside supporters, vehicles and alleged violations of election rules.
Delhi High Court Takes Note of DUSU Campaign Violations
The Delhi High Court monitored several issues related to the DUSU election campaign. The court raised concerns about alleged violence, the presence of outsiders, vehicles without number plates, large campaign convoys and other violations of election rules.
On September 18, the court issued notices to 140 student candidates and barred victory processions after the election results.
Delhi Police told the court that authorities had seized 49 vehicles, issued more than 5,400 challans and arrested four people during enforcement action linked to the election.
The court also sought information from Delhi University and the police about steps taken to enforce the election code and maintain discipline during the campaign.
DUSU History: From 1947 to the 2026 Election
The history of the Delhi University Students’ Union dates back to the early years after Independence.
According to historical university records, on August 6, 1947, the Vice-Chancellor informed the Executive Council about students’ desire to establish a university students’ union. The university also considered an initial financial assistance of Rs 150 for the process.
DUSU held its first election in 1954. Over the decades, the student body became an important platform for student representation and campus politics.
Student movements in the 1970s also shaped the election system and representation within the university. National political developments later influenced DUSU politics, while organisations such as ABVP and NSUI became major participants in the electoral process.
Over time, DUSU elections expanded beyond routine campus contests and became an important platform for debates around student representation, campus facilities and university policies.
