Bihar has marked a significant milestone in its sporting journey by securing a record 36 medals, including seven golds, at the 7th Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG) 2025. This achievement has propelled the state to the 14th position in the national rankings, a remarkable ascent from its previous 28th place, reflecting the state’s dedicated efforts in sports development.

The games, held from May 4 to 15 across five cities—Patna, Rajgir, Gaya, Bhagalpur, and Begusarai—witnessed participation from approximately 10,000 athletes and support staff representing 36 states and union territories. Bihar’s athletes shone in disciplines such as Thang Ta, Rugby, Athletics, and Sepak Takraw, contributing to the state’s best-ever performance at the KIYG.
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s administration has been instrumental in this success, with substantial investments in sports infrastructure, including the inauguration of the Rajgir International Sports Complex. This facility, spanning 90 acres, offers training in 24 sports disciplines and is part of the state’s vision to become a hub for sports development.

In addition to infrastructure, the state has implemented athlete-centric policies like the ‘Medal Lao, Naukri Pao’ scheme, which provides direct government employment to medal-winning athletes. As of 2024, 71 athletes have benefited from this initiative, receiving appointments in various government departments.
The successful hosting of the KIYG 2025 and the state’s improved performance have garnered praise from national leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who acknowledged Bihar’s commitment to promoting sports and developing infrastructure. With upcoming events like the Women’s Kabaddi World Cup and the Asian Rugby Championship on the horizon, Bihar is poised to further its reputation as a burgeoning center for sports excellence.
