Akshay Kumar’s much-anticipated comedy-thriller Housefull 5 is off to a flying start, raking in ₹87 crore at the domestic box office over its opening weekend. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, the film earned ₹24 crore on Friday, ₹31 crore on Saturday, and ₹32 crore on Sunday, with an impressive 54.77% evening show occupancy on the final day of the weekend.
Directed by Tarun Mansukhani, Housefull 5 brings together a stellar ensemble including Abhishek Bachchan, Riteish Deshmukh, and Jacqueline Fernandez. What sets this installment apart is its experimental release strategy two versions titled 5A and 5B, each with a different climax.
Adding to the excitement, Akshay Kumar surprised fans by attending screenings in disguise, wearing the film’s “killer mask” and later posting audience reactions on social media.
While critics have been mixed in their reviews, the film has benefitted from strong word-of-mouth and supportive fans. Its international performance is also looking healthy, with ₹22 crore from international markets and a total worldwide of ₹109 crore.
Housefull 5 should cross the ₹100 crore by Monday domestic collections, and so far, likely the biggest post-pandemic opening for Akshay Kumar. Trade experts say this trend is showing the film’s longevity is only solidifying the Housefull franchise as a go-to for audiences – It has slapstick humour and a whodunnit context and can be a hit, no matter the critics results.
