India Rolls Out First Vande Bharat Sleeper Train on January 17: Howrah–Guwahati Overnight Travel Just Got Faster and Comfy

India launches its first Vande Bharat Sleeper Train on January 17, 2026. Know route details, travel time, fares, coach layout, key features, and why this overnight Howrah–Guwahati train is a big step for Indian Railways.

Malda/New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today flagged off India’s very first Vande Bharat Sleeper Train from Malda Town Railway Station in West Bengal. This marks an important moment for overnight train travel in the country. The new semi-high-speed sleeper train will connect Howrah in Kolkata and Kamakhya in Guwahati. It will cut travel time by more than 2½ hours compared to current trains. Passengers can cover almost 1,000 kilometers in just over 14 hours. The train offers a travel experience similar to economy-class flights at an affordable price, without waiting in long airport lines.

The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) zone operates the Vande Bharat Sleeper Express, which has the numbers 27575 and 27576. It is an electric multiple unit (EMU) train with air conditioning and a top speed of 180 kmph. The train can accommodate 823 passengers in its 16 coaches. This comprises one AC First Class coach, four AC 2-tier coaches, and eleven AC 3-tier coaches.

What Makes This Train Stand Out?

Passengers will enjoy a safe and comfortable journey aboard the train with many amenities. The private cabins offer both comfort and privacy. They include sleeping compartments, easy-to-climb ladders, and a full set of modern hotel-style facilities.

In addition, the train provides strong safety systems and smart features. Passengers can control lights and temperature at their berths individually. The train also guarantees a confirmed berth for every passenger, without relying on the RAC system.

How Much Will It Cost?

Meals are included in ticket prices, which are kept affordable given the level of comfort provided:

AC 3-Tier: approximately ₹2,300
AC 2-Tier: roughly ₹3,000
First Class AC: About ₹3,640

The starting price for shorter trips up to 400 km is approximately ₹960.

Especially for overnight travel, this pricing makes the train not only an affordable choice but also an excellent option for travelers who want first-rate comfort without having to pay for airfare.

Why This Launch Matters Big Time

This is not just another train service. The Vande Bharat series introduces its first sleeper version, opening new possibilities for long-distance overnight routes. It strengthens rail connectivity between West Bengal and the Northeast, which will likely boost travel between regions and promote religious tourism along the route. Indian Railways launched this service as part of its plan to upgrade long-distance train travel, with the NFR zone operating the first sleeper train.

Moreover, on the same day, Indian Railways also launched six to eight new Amrit Bharat Express trains, with their services scheduled to begin between January 17 and 18, 2026.

What’s Next for Vande Bharat Sleeper Services

The sleeper version expands the growing Vande Bharat family and serves long overnight journeys. It meets the demand for better travel options across long distances in a country as large as India. This move clearly highlights Indian Railways’ focus on improving inter-city and long-distance train travel.

Passengers who want to travel on the Vande Bharat Sleeper Express can check schedules and book tickets through the Indian Railways website or IRCTC. With faster travel, better comfort, and modern facilities, this train could change the way people experience overnight train journeys—making them easier, more comfortable, and worth choosing.
