New Delhi: In a shocking escalation of anti-government protests, Rajyalaxmi Chitrakar, wife of former Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal, was killed today when protesters set fire to their residence in the Dallu area of Kathmandu.
According to local media reports, Chitrakar was trapped inside the house as demonstrators, primarily from the Gen Z movement, ignited the blaze. She was rushed to Kirtipur Burn Hospital but succumbed to her injuries shortly after.
The protests were sparked by the government’s recent ban on 26 social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and X (formerly Twitter), which many youth activists viewed as an infringement on free expression. The demonstrations, primarily led by young people, escalated into violent riots, leading to the deaths of at least 19 protesters and hundreds of injuries nationwide.
In response to the unrest, Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli resigned on September 9, 2025, following intense nationwide protests that left at least 20 dead and hundreds injured. The demonstrations, largely driven by Gen Z activists opposing corruption and government inaction on economic issues, escalated into violent riots. Protesters torched key government buildings, including parliament, courts, and multiple ministries, and attacked political leaders’ homes.
The incident has drawn widespread condemnation from political leaders and human rights organizations, who have called for an independent investigation into the events. The National Human Rights Commission urged authorities not to use excessive force and to “show restraint in handling the protests.”
As the nation grapples with the aftermath of these tragic events, the future of Nepal’s political landscape remains uncertain.
