Congress Leader, Rahul Gandhi Challenges State Authorities, Emphasizes Commitment to Social Justice Amid Administrative Pushback
15 May 2025, New Delhi
In a bold demonstration of political resolve, Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi defied police restrictions to meet with Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) aspirants in Patna on January 18, 2025. The aspirants had been protesting alleged irregularities in the BPSC examinations and had faced police lathi-charges during their demonstrations.
Despite being denied permission for a scheduled student interaction event in Darbhanga, Bihar, on May 14, 2025, Gandhi proceeded to engage directly with the protesting students in Patna. The ruling JD(U)-BJP combination engineered the “repressive measure” that was the refusal of permission, according to the Congress party.
During his visit to the Gandhi Bagh Dharna Sthal in Patna, Gandhi listened to the grievances of the BPSC aspirants, who alleged exam irregularities and police brutality during their protests. Videos from the site showed protesters presenting evidence of police action against them.
Gandhi’s actions in Bihar are part of a broader pattern of his political engagements, where he has often confronted administrative barriers to connect with citizens facing injustices. In December 2024, he was stopped by Uttar Pradesh Police at the Ghazipur border while attempting to visit violence-hit Sambhal, an action he termed as a violation of his constitutional rights.
