When fans discovered that Indian cricket player Virat Kohli’s verified Instagram account had liked a picture of actress Avneet Kaur, he became the focus of a social media frenzy. A fan website posted the photo, which showed Kaur on a recent trip to Goa wearing a green bralette and a bikini scarf.

A day after Kohli sent a touching birthday greeting for his wife, actress Anushka Sharma, the ‘like’ was sent out, sparking a wave of memes and internet conjecture. Screenshots of the exchange quickly went viral, and internet users made fun of Anushka Sharma and even Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta.

“I’d like to clarify that while clearing my feed, it appears the algorithm may have mistakenly registered an interaction,” Kohli wrote in a statement responding to the unexpected attention on his Instagram Stories. It was done with absolutely no intention. Please don’t make any erroneous assumptions.
