With KL Rahul 35 runs short of 10,000 international runs, Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill lead India against West Indies in Thiruvananthapuram

Thiruvananthapuram: Indian wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul stands just 35 runs away from completing 10,000 international runs as India begin their three-match ODI series against West Indies at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday.

Rahul can join an exclusive group of Indian batters if he reaches the milestone in the series opener.

The Karnataka batter has scored 9,965 runs in 240 matches and 280 innings across formats at an average of 40.50. His record includes 22 centuries and 63 fifties, with a highest score of 199. If Rahul reaches 10,000 runs, he will become only the 15th Indian batter to achieve the milestone.

The first ODI will begin at 2:00 PM IST as a day-night match, while the toss will take place at 1:30 PM IST. Shubman Gill will lead India, with Rahul serving as vice-captain and the team’s main wicketkeeper. Shai Hope will captain West Indies.

The 10,000-Run Milestone

Reaching 10,000 international runs remains one of cricket’s major individual milestones. Sunil Gavaskar became the first Indian to reach the mark. Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, Virender Sehwag, MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Yuvraj Singh, VVS Laxman, Shikhar Dhawan, Gautam Gambhir, Mohammad Azharuddin and Dilip Vengsarkar later joined the group, among others.

Rahul can now add his name to this list and join a group that includes some of India’s biggest cricket stars.

ODIs have produced some of Rahul’s strongest numbers. He has scored 3,412 runs in 98 matches and 90 innings at an average of 49.44. His ODI record includes eight centuries and 20 fifties, with an unbeaten 112 against New Zealand earlier this year.

Rahul has played several roles for India. He has opened the innings, anchored the middle order and finished innings when required. His ability to handle different roles has helped him remain part of India’s plans through several selection cycles.

In 2026, Rahul has scored 194 runs in seven ODI innings at an average of 48.50 and a strike rate above 129. He also scored a century against New Zealand. These numbers show that he has continued to produce runs when India have given him a defined role.

Rahul Has a Strong Record Against West Indies

Rahul has performed well against West Indies in ODIs. He has scored 282 runs in five matches at an average of 56.50, including one century and one fifty.

His record against the Caribbean side gives him confidence heading into the series. Rahul has also produced strong performances against West Indies in other formats. Recently, he scored an unbeaten half-century that helped India complete a Test series whitewash.

Ravindra Jadeja returns to the ODI team after a long gap. Young all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy and players such as Auqib Nabi and Naman Dhir give India additional depth and allow the team to look at options for the future.

West Indies ODI squad: Shai Hope (captain, wicketkeeper), John Campbell, Keacy Carty, Justin Greaves, Sherfane Rutherford, Roston Chase, Keemo Paul, Jewel Andrew, Amir Jangoo, Matthew Forde, Alzarri Joseph, Shamar Joseph, Vitel Lawes, Gudakesh Motie and Jayden Seales.

West Indies enter the series with a combination of experienced players and emerging talent.

Alzarri Joseph and Jayden Seales lead the pace attack and can trouble batters if the pitch offers early movement. Shai Hope remains one of the team’s most reliable batters and also leads the side.

Other Milestones to Watch

Rahul is not the only Indian batter approaching a major milestone.

Virat Kohli needs 59 runs to reach 15,000 ODI runs. If he achieves the mark, he will become only the second player after Sachin Tendulkar to reach the milestone.

Kohli also has an impressive record against West Indies and has scored the most centuries against them among current players. Rohit Sharma also has several personal milestones within reach.

Series Builds Towards the 2027 World Cup

The three-match ODI series begins India’s 2026-27 home white-ball season and gives the team an important opportunity to build towards the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

Shubman Gill’s team will look to settle combinations, give opportunities to fringe players and build momentum after a mixed year in ODI cricket.

West Indies, who sit lower in the ICC standings, face a more difficult path. They need to go through the World Cup Qualifier route and will use this tour to test themselves against one of the world’s leading teams.

Head coach Daren Sammy has described the tour as an opportunity for the team to challenge itself and improve.

What to Watch in the First ODI

India will focus on the opening combination of Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli’s run-scoring form and Rahul’s contribution with both the bat and gloves.

With Bumrah unavailable, India will rely on Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna in the pace attack, while Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja will handle the spin duties.

West Indies will hope their fast bowlers can take early wickets. They will also depend on Shai Hope, Keacy Carty and Sherfane Rutherford to build competitive totals.

Spin and control during the middle overs could become important if the pitch slows as the match progresses.

KL Rahul’s Journey

KL Rahul made his Test debut against Australia in December 2014. He made his ODI debut against Zimbabwe in 2016 and scored a century in that match, becoming the first Indian to score a century on ODI debut.

At 34, Rahul remains an important part of India’s white-ball plans. Reaching 10,000 international runs would add another major achievement to a career built on resilience, technique and consistency.

As India and West Indies walk out in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday, Rahul will need only 35 runs to reach the landmark.
