Janata Party Chief Navneet Chaturvedi Seeks Clarity on Rahul Gandhi–Sandeep Dikshit Exchange Involving Giorgia Meloni
New Delhi: Janata Party National President Navneet Chaturvedi will submit a representation to the MEA and PMO. He will ask them to examine remarks made during an August 13 political programme in New Delhi involving Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Sandeep Dikshit and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
During the programme, Rahul Gandhi used a physical demonstration involving Sandeep Dikshit while discussing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s practice of embracing foreign leaders. Dikshit reportedly referred to Meloni during the exchange. This brought the Italian Prime Minister into a political and humorous discussion about the Indian Prime Minister.
No Allegation of Conspiracy
Chaturvedi said he was not alleging any conspiracy or foreign involvement as a fact. He wants authorities to assess whether the episode was merely political satire or whether its context, timing and subsequent circulation point to a deliberate or coordinated effort that could create diplomatic embarrassment or strain India–Italy relations.
He has asked authorities to review the complete, unedited recording. They should verify the exact words used and their context. He also wants them to determine how Meloni’s name entered the exchange and examine how the video was later circulated.
Chaturvedi has also asked authorities to assess whether any foreign organisation, individual, intermediary or other external interest played a role. He wants them to do so only if credible evidence justifies such an inquiry.
The representation also seeks clarification through diplomatic channels. Chaturvedi wants to know whether the incident has triggered any concern or adverse reaction in Italy. He also wants authorities to assess its potential impact on India–Italy relations.
No Call for Political Censorship
Chaturvedi clarified that his representation does not seek political censorship. He does not want action simply because someone criticised the Prime Minister or government. If authorities find the episode to be ordinary political speech or satire, he said no further action may be necessary.
Action Only if Evidence Emerges
However, if they find credible evidence of deliberate coordination, foreign involvement or unlawful conduct, he has called for appropriate action under the law.
He further stressed that foreign policy is a matter of national interest. Remarks involving the leader of a friendly foreign country can have implications beyond domestic politics. This is particularly relevant when television, digital media and social platforms can spread political content to international audiences almost instantly.
